Con Report: Motaku, Day 1

Oct 09, 2010 06:44

Motaku is a relatively new con, so it's not surprising they didn't have it any more "together" than any other convention on the first day. We were greeted at the registration desk in a friendly manner, but in less than a minute, staff was bickering about where to send us for Artist Alley check in 9_9 And when we got to where we were vaguely directed, there was nothing really marking the AA check in and the person who could sign us in wasn't even available. So, the staff member who was bickering with the other checked us in and showed us our table.

Setting up was uneventful and we have some darling neighbors (both of whom are mothers XD) Pixelportrayal.com is to our left and we have a Japanese Instructor to our right who is temptingly dangling the possibility of us spending 1-5 years in Japan as teachers. Awesome.

Sales were supremely disappointing to the point of being insulting. Selling nothing, I think, would have been better. We sold 1 keychain for $3. $3 is all we made that day. It's a very good thing this is the closest convention we've been to and we didn't have to pay for the table. I'm really hoping today is better.

And it's not that we didn't have viewership! Many people came by to look and compliment. One was interested in a commission, but ended up going with someone else who had cheaper commissions. I could lower my prices to get sales, but I'm torn whether or not I want to undersell myself or maintain some pride in my work. I'm one of the best artists in the alley and my prices should reflect that.

Now, how to convince many new con-goers and young fans that's the case XD

We saw several first-timers come by. The Vendor's room is tiny, too. I'm hoping that works in our favor in the next couple of days. Otherwise, we were completely underwhelmed as far as sales go. Still, we had relatively smooth sailing as far as con management.

Yes, that's not the worst experience getting in to a con XD not by far. And we had a pre-schooler in tow, too!

Hoping today is better. Now, time to get ready!
