TV

I'm so glad I turned on Nova today. They were running a show "Ghost in your Genes" about epigenetics and how genetics aren't just the bottom line when it comes to traits/diseases. In fact, these studies, though they're still controversial, suggest that generations down the line can experience changes to their epigenome based around things like toxins and famine. This really lends weight to the "live clean" philosophy because smoking and drinking doesn't just effect you. It effects your genetic legacy. Many things can impact it. The beauty of the epigenome is, though, that it can potentially be remedied with nutrition and drugs.

And to think, all of this came up because of the Human Genome Project. It was so fascinating! I'm in nerd heaven right now. I really should read more science magazines or news articles online, because this is probably old news to people in the field. Pardon my gushing.

Watch some of the show

Also, we finished the first disc of Season 3 of Dexter last night. Eeheehee, you crazy sombitch.

Dreams

This morning, I was having a great dream that involved (as many of my dreams do) living in a post-Apocalyptic world. This one, in particular, was set in New York City which was largely flooded, so there were big canal systems through the city and makeshift bridges between neighborhoods. In each district lived self-governing tribes that would war with one another for resources.

Now, the tribe with which I lived/helped manage, was made mostly of teens and young adults. Somehow, they had found some information on a deep freeze storage facility that had been yet undiscovered. We broke in there and found a cache of food from long before the war! There were valuable things like meat, yeast, and even old recipes in there. One kid piped up that he always wanted to try pizza, so we set about making that.

I had some meta-non-dream information about making pizza and began following the recipe I knew. Well, a girl from another tribe who was a friend of a girl from ours barged in while we were making the 'za. She was a nosy and opportunistic character who started bullying some of the younger boys to see what we were doing. We managed to re-direct her attention and fled to another establishment where we could cook the pizzas after they proofed.

There was a bar below this place where people were gathered at dinner time. I was sitting at the bar, wasting time while the pizzas rose, when the lady beside me was accosted by a local "celebrity" known as Heat. Heat had a peculiar ability to melt materials or boil liquids by holding them in his hand. Obviously, this had some other practical applications. People were terrified of the guy, and he liked it that way. Mostly, though, it seemed he just wanted to tell stories.

He sat down and began telling one of those stories in a thick, Russian accent, though he was, supposedly, from the US. "Canada Boots, they called me!" He boasted just as I was slipping away. As I climbed the stairs, he went on, "I thought it was because I traveled to Central America from California and they didn't know their Geography, HAHA! But it was really because I was smuggling 800lbs. of contraband in my boots! I never knew it neither!"

His story faded into the background when I reached the apartment at the top of the stairs. My friends were there playing old video games. The pizzas had been sauced and cheesed, ready to go in the oven! However, it seems Heat noticed me sneaking away and followed upstairs just as we were getting ready to take the pizzas to the oven. We hid the pies immediately. He tromped in on his fat legs to tell us his story since he had a captive audience, but smelled the pizza sauce in the musty room. As he began to express his curiosity and look around, the Emergency Broadcast System alarm went off on PBS.

Saved by the bell!

Heat never found our pizzas. Ha! But... that means we never got to eat our pizzas too. Still, we didn't have to sit through one of his stupid stories, so the interruption wasn't a total loss.

I have weird dreams.

Art and life

I'm finishing up my dragon drawing for Archon today. It's nice to actually be able and sit down for hours uninterrupted by tiny. She's over with Yaya today and having a great time by the sounds of it. Friday we're going to the pool at the community center, I think. It's been over a month!

Conventions

Motaku's coming up next month! I'm tickled that one of the things they'll be doing this year is anime speed dating! How cute is that? I've been asked to do some promo art for them. I hope I can fit it into my schedule;;;;;;
