A young girl, about thirteen years old, slender, with long braided black hair, poked her head from around a corner. She'd been in orphanages and foster homes her whole life. A problem child, and she was getting too old, now. She'd given up hope of finding a family a long time ago.

Pursing her lips, she snuck up next to Al and snatched the documents out of his hand. Her English reading was really terrible; switching schools a million times didn't do much for learning. "A...Aru...fonzu...Eruriku."

He was cute, at least. A little older than her. She liked foreign kids. She'd got along really well with the few foreign children that came to stay. They had very similar personalities and leases on life. Maybe this...hard-to-pronounce named kid would be the same. She punched him hard on the arm.

Alphonse had almost been asleep when those peices of paper were taken out of his hand. It was just a little girl, so he didn't see the harm in letting her see. He smiled a little as she stumbled over his name, his eyes opening just a little bit. It wasn't until his arm was punched that he jolted to the land of the conscious, with a small frown and a mumbled.

"Ow! Hey!" Alphonse glanced at the girl, his grumpy little frown fading away into a somewhat curious little smile. He didn't mind kids, a lot of the time they were just a little misunderstood. "Hey. What's your name?"

She got really close to his face, studying him carefully, looking rather dubious, before nodding her head in a quick bow. "Name's Furuhata Satomi. How old're you, kid? You speak Japanese funny. You American? Your name's weird, too. I'm shortenin' it to Aru. That's easy to say."

She sat on the bench next to him, but in a few moments, she was doing a handstand on it, her shirt flying up over her stomach and her long gangly legs kicking in the air.

Alphonse shifted backwards when the girls face shifted towards his. He offered her a rather hesitant smile as she talked. "That's fine. I'm not from America. I guess I'm from a place really far away. I can try to talk clearer."

Alphonse turned and watched the girl as she sat down, but quickly shifted away again as she stood on her hands. He laughed after a moment, and bent forward to try and find her eyes. "You're really talented. Who taught you how to do that?"

Satomi pushed off with her hands and landed her feet easily on the ground. "I taught myself. I teach myself a lot of stuff. You didn't tell me how old you are. Why do you talk like you're an adult? Other kids don't say stuff like 'you're talented'. Only grown-ups say stuff like that."

She crawled onto the bench with her knees, tugging and yanking at Al's hair and clothing. "Your hair is really long for a guy. They might make you cut it. To make you more 'presentable.'"

She talked a lot. Alphonse had a hard time keeping up with her, but it was hard not to smile at the other girl. She was a little nosey, and a little rough with the hair pulling, but Al didn't mind too much. A friend was a friend right?

"Oh. I'm ah, fifteen." It was best not to keep it complicated. Alphonse did manage a laugh, and another smile at what she said last though. "I guess I've had a lot of practice being an adult. I didn't get much of a chance to be a kid." He didn't mind.

As for his hair? Alphonse shrugged. "If they cut it, that's fine. I don't mind either way. It would just get in the way, wouldn't it?"

Satomi set her mouth in a thin line, and continued to play with Al's hair. "Yeah. Me either, really. So. What happened to your parents? My dad beat on my mom and me, so we had to leave. Then my mom died, and my dad's in jail. So, I'm here." She touched her side reflexively when mentioning her father, and yanked on Al's hair extra hard.

"I hope they don't cut your hair, Aru. I like it long. It makes you cute. You might get a family really fast since you're so nice and cute."

Alphonse's eyes widened. What kind of life had this poor girl been forced to live? He felt sorry for her. That wasn't how anyone should have to live their younger years. "I'm sorry, that sounds pretty bad...OW!" Alphonse flinched a little when she pulled on his hair. "Be careful. That hurt."

"My mom died when my brother and I were really young. I never knew my dad really well. He left before I was really all that old." Alphonse smiled a little, though it was a little sad. "When my mother died, my brother and I left, and we got separated. I ended up here."

"I'm flattered you think I'll get adopted fast, Satomi. Why haven't you been adopted?" She seemed like a nice girl, and to Alphonse, she deserved a new family far more than he did. He could take care of himself.

"You're a BOY, and you're older. You can take it!" She yanked just as hard. So tender-headed. She would have to toughen him up so when she kicked his ass, he wouldn't go crying to the teachers and volunteers.

"And I don't get adopted cause I'm BAD. No one wants you when you're a troublemaker. I've been with some families, but they always send me back. Cause I break stuff and kick animals. Yeah, I'm real bad." As if to emphasize it, she yanked on Al's hair even harder.

"OW! Stop it! Just because I'm a boy doesn't mean it's okay to pull my hair!" Alphonse retorted. He frowned and pryed the girls fingers loose from his hair, before standing. He couldn't hold it against the girl, even if the way she was behaving upset him.

"Why would you act like that? Animals haven't done anything to you. They usually just want to be your friend. Like dogs, and cats too." Alphonse's face twisted into a scolding frown, one hand settling determinedly on his hip. With the other he grabbed up his forms. He didn't want to think the worst, but he didn't want Satomi to run off with those important papers either.

Satomi's face suddenly scrunched up. "You're just like the adults. STUPID!" And she kicked Al right in the crotch before running off back behind the corner into the nurse running the orphanage.

"Satomi-chan, I hope you weren't bothering our new--"

"Go AWAY!" Satomi pushed her with small hands, and the nurse frowned, walking up to Al.

Alphonse doubled over immediately once the girl's foot connected with a part of his anatomy that didn't appreciate it at all. He flinched, and found himself out of breath, but managed to glance up at the nurse. She looked nice at least, and if anything, she'd saved him from having the crap kicked out of him. There was no way Al would have wanted to hurt that little girl.

"Ah.. no. She's fine. She was just saying hello." Laughs a bit, before straightening up. Oh, that was going to hurt for a while. Ow.

The nurse held Al's arm to help him up, and laughed nervously. "Please forgive her...she's a little...rambunctious at times..."

She dusted off Al's clothing a bit, and looked him over. "You're Alphonse Elric-kun, correct? Is your native language English? I can speak to you in that, if you prefer."

One of those anomalies, the police had said. She didn't really know why an anomaly was getting sent to this particular orphanage, especially with the high rate of adoptions they had, but she supposed she shouldn't question a child's life that was now in her hands. He needed help, and she would provide it. And he had such a nice little face, too.

"Ah, I'm not angry... hahaha. She kicks kind of hard." Alphonse managed a laugh, and a thank you at the hand up. " This language is fine though, really. I need to practice it anyway." It was the truth. If he was going to go to school here, and live here, he might as well practice the language. It was curious how well he'd taken to it so far, even if it was a little difficult.

"I'm really sorry about all of the trouble." Alphonse offered the woman a sheepish expression. "I wouldn't mind helping out around here, to make up for it." It was the least he could do afterall.

"Alright then, come this way. You came a little quickly, so we don't have your room set up yet...but you must be hungry. Would you like a little dinner?"

Poor thing didn't even have a change of clothes or a change of underwear...nothing. She felt sorry for these children...coming to this world with literally nothing but the clothes on their backs. No family, alone, most of them older children and hard to adopt out.

"After you've had something, we can sift through the clothing we've got in the lost and found and see if anything fits you. I'm Naoki, and the kids will introduce themselves to you as you go along. Most of them are just a bit younger than you. You're fourteen, right?"

If anyone had talked to Alphonse about the situation he was in, they'd find that the blonde boy hadn't even thought it logical to feel sorry for himself. There were people a lot worse off than he was. He'd been through worse in the past, as well. Alphonse felt himself fortunate if anything. Even if the orphanage was a little inconvenient.

"It's nice to meet you Naoki.." Alphonse began. "I really appreciate everything you're doing for me." Clothes, food. It really was awfully kind. "I'll be glad to meet some of them. The other kids." At his age, Alphonse began to shake his head. He wasn't fourteen, but that was what the caseworker had put on his papers. "Ah, it's a little complicated, I'm really closer to fifteen, if you really want to know." Physically at least. It was beginning to get a little frustrating, if he had to be completely honest.
