I now have a part-time job as a sanitation worker at The Old Mill Inn.
Quite to my surprise, last week I got a phone call telling me to meet with the Human Resources manager and to prepare to begin job training. It came despite the facts that I was sure my measly one reference was inadequate, and that I wasn't very confident in my performance in the job interview. I started searching for other job leads the afternoon after my interview, in fact, and was cringing at the possible necessity of joining an 'odd job squad' to flesh out my references. Needless to say in light of all that, I was euphoric to be hired by The Old Mill, and even though the rigours of my first two days' work there has dampened my enthusiasm for the job a mite, I still think it's something I could tolerate.
Thanks to this job I'll finally be able to relieve my family of some of the financial burden of supporting me whilst I study, and I should be able to begin saving for future necessities and distractions, like another trip to the US. The down side of this job, however -- besides the dirty, smelly, muscle-straining and very sweaty nature of the work -- is that it'll be a long time before I again can join

voralis,
cjthomas et al. for their usual Saturday evening get-together. The Old Mill's busiest hours are typically Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, and those are the times when most part-time workers are scheduled to work. That's the reason I was absent without notice last Saturday evening -- I was washing dishes and then cleaning the dish pit until 5 o'clock Sunday morning.
Still, I expect the sacrifice of even such quality time as that will prove to be more than worthwhile when I can at last rent a decent apartment and have friends visit, among many other benefits. :)
