Well. Haven't updated for a while, and I actually have stuff to talk about ( Read more... )

god no.. no no no. astrophysics is cool and all, but i'm into quantum stuff too. as of now it looks like i'm going to go into mathematical physics. quantum field theory stuff, perhaps. I say that because I have a friend whos a grad student in the math department here and hes doing very interesting research in hilbert spaces and tunneling boson stuff things. i dont know, he explained it to me once-- quite above my head. but i love pure math and i love quantum.. so i want to go into something that merges the two. i'm doing the astrophysics stuff because a) i love my boss there, b) i've worked with him as a mentor since high school, c) its going to get my name on a paper or two, and d) its interesting, but not quite what i'm into.

anyways, the boss I was referring to originally is named carl wieman. he used to do research in quantum stuff, though he recently retired from that in order to focus on physics education research. specifically quantum mechanics education research. he's moving to canada to continue his project at UBC. apparently their paying him two times what he makes here. but yeah, him and this guy (who is arguably an even nicer man) named eric cornell won the prize in 2001 for creating the bose-einstein condensate. yeah, their lab is pretty damn cool.

There is so much in quantum mechanics that is amazingly interesting. My friends think I'm crazy. But then again, I think the one is crazy because he finds solid state physics interesting (superconductors put me to sleep). The research Carl Wieman is doing sounds very cool. Do you know of any links to his research?
