'Or any part of your body, really, we're not fussy where we stick this,' said Fred. I think this was more or less the moment of the book when I truly realized what hateful little psychos Gred and Forge really are... This line just sums it up for me. Threatening others without almost no provocation with disturbing hints at sexual aggression... Oh, but they`re just merry pranksters - they`re funny and harmless... right?
Only in the way that Jeremy Dahmer was fun and harmless. But they're Gryffindors and Weasleys and they love to fight the good fight, which makes it alright... right?
According to the values of the books, it gives them basically the right to behave like any proper junior Death Eater would - but because they`re fighting for teh Good Side, that`s so very kewl of them and they`re only being loyal to Harry... right?
Only if you believe the side of light can't commit war atrocities themselves. Obviously, their transcendent belief in the goodness of their cause (which villians can never equal, obviously) shield them from ever doing wrong... right?
Gneh. I disagree about Ginny -- it's actually quite realistic for a person to come back to school after a summer and seem completely different. I've certainly seen it happen throughout my school years -- granted, I went to school in Estonia then Hungary when I was Harry's age; maybe this kind of thing does not happen in North America? That is, people go away for a summer and come back and you can't recognise them? I've certainly seen it happen when I went to school in Europe. I did attend a Canadian school for 2 years, but found my classmates too insipid to bother with and thus don't have any insights on their personalities.
Forget summer; when a friend of mine got killed during a two-week winter break when I was 13, I came back to school with a definite attitude adjustment. People can and do change, especially when they're teenagers. While I don't like the fact that Ginny seems to have grown a backbone suddenly, the books aren't called "Ginny Weasley and ...". Not holding my breath, but since there are still two books to go, Ginny's

She is? I must have missed the references to this then. When I first read OotP, I was too interested in Harry and his angsty angst of doom -- upon subsequent readings, I noticed that something was rotten in the house of Weasley. Is the fact that Ginny was supposed to always be like that actually mentioned/hinted at in the book?
Doesn't Hermione (JKR"s designated Voice of Authoritah within the text) repeatedly comment about how Ginny's always been like her current Mary Sue version? If nothing else, I remember the horrifying priceless moment when Hermione told Ginny's own brothers that she learned to fly by breaking into their shed and using their brooms since she was 6. Which is just... yeah. As oblivious as brothers and parents can you, you'da thunk they wouldn't have overlooked something like that!
Basically, Jo Rowling has gone through some interesting contortions in trying to make us believe that Ginny has always been as Sexy! and Cool! and Hip! as she is now.
Even given that, though, there's another joke shop on Diagon Alley. (The twins and Lee buy stuff there before school starts in Book 2.) Those wacky wizards!
Heh. This just brings home to me how boarding-school, upper-class the kids are. I presume the barman is Aberforth, what with the familiar face, goat smell and the way he listens when Dumbledore’s name comes up.
Yup, it's Aberforth, JKR confirmed it during the Edinburgh Book Festival.
Heh. Did Ron forget for a moment? I suppose it’s not surprising, given the amount of fuss Harry and Hermione have made over him being prefect at all.
And I love that Hermione’s problem with underage drinking is that it might damage the image of the school and the holy prefect badge; rather than some other mumsy complaint about her ickle boys’ welfare.
I also like that Ron and Seamus (the most normal Gryffindor boys) have this fervent wish to get drunk, rather than anything particularly noble or selfless like Harry and Hermione. That was totally my ambition at 15. And I'm not even being sarcastic!
Lovely how Prefecture is the first thing on her mind. I like that Ron and Seamus are so normal, it gives me a break from all the angst and anger.
Like I said before, Ginny is pretty two-faced. She is all nice (or tries to) to Neville's and Luna's face, but talks badly about them behind their backs. But since Ginny is just that KeWl, they love her anyway. *vomits*
Dude, word. When we finally have our most-fervently-hated-character-in-OOTP poll (which we will, precious, yes we will!) Ginny is getting my vote for sure.
Ginny, Hermione (fer sure!), Harry, Grawp (how could we not?) and anyone else. Whoever makes the poll will have to go through the archives and see all the people complained about the most.

I thought that WWW was located in Diagon Alley in Wizarding London, not Hogsmeade. I might be wrong on that.

Yeah, you're right, completely.
