the one on the swine flu

so the alert level level has been raised to phase 4 and yellow by who and moh respectively, and thus increases the risk of a pandemic.

have been monitoring the alerts on the swine flu situation rather closely, given that it would have a major impact at the workplace. now that the alert level has been upped, it would place more prevention measures in place in the hospitals for the safety of all concerned.

am due for a mask fit back at the workplace. in the event that the situation calls for it, all staff are expected to know their mask sizes for the various types of masks to facilitate smooth collection. cant remember being more fearful than this when sars broke out about six years ago. perhaps back then, i was only in junior college, and had no idea what it was like to be right in the thick of action. all we knew were that we were to keep a temperature log and there was a specific bell that rang for "temp-taking" back then. despite knowing the seriousness of the situation, we were all secretly happy about the slight disruption in classes, and also the short break we earned.

but now that i find myself in the organization that prides itself to be at the forefront, fear strikes. in any event, the mask would be the only barrier between you and the patient. that's how crucial that little white thing is to any frontline healthcare worker.

and my hats off to those in the emergency departments, polyclinics, GPs etc for being the first in line to brave any situation that arises.
