Sehun knew it was wrong, when he was lying in Joonmyeon's bed, leaning into a kiss. He knew they shouldn't be doing it and if they were caught they were going to be sent away to be re-educated. It was against the law to be in love, it was against the law to be kissing, but Sehun didn't care as long as he was with Joonmyeon. "We should run away." Joonmyeon said breathlessly when they stopped kissing. "I've been thinking about it since we started having sex." He said, hand tracing down the other's arm. "My matching is next week you know." Joonmyeon said with a sigh.
"I hope you get a pretty girl." Sehun said quietly. "We always said this was going to stop when someone gets matched." He said quietly.
"I love you." Joonmyeon said quietly, leaning to give the other another kiss. "You know once I'm matched my parents want me to get married within two months because there is no reason not to get married it's not like the old days where people married to show how much they loved each other."
"And then you'll be a daddy right?" Sehun said quietly.
"Hey, I can hear that jealousy." Joonmyeon smiled, "You know that there is no sex in a match." He said with a small sigh, "Probably the day after our marriage we'll go to the centre and they'll take our DNA and make the kid or whatever." Joonmyeon knew the process anyone who'd been to school knew the process. Sehun knew the process, he just needed the confirmation.
"We can't run away. They'll find us." Sehun said quietly.
"Not if we went to the forest." Joonmyeon said quietly. "There are colonies, we just have to get past the forest and they'll never find us and we'll be free to love as long as we find a colony."
"How do you know we'll find them?" Sehun replied.
"Sehun," Joonmyeon looked at the other, "I know that I'd do whatever it took for us to be together and I know that you would do what ever you could for me." he said with a small sigh. "The colonies are just outside the forest and they'll accept us. We're in love,"
"We're gay, Joonmyeon, it's like not only are we in love we're going against the society and it's male-female normative matching systems."
"Sehun, I'm well aware that we're a same-sex couple but they don't care out there, it's about being free to love someone and pulling your weight for the colonies. Minseok and Luhan ran away last year."
"Yeah, but so did Chanyeol and Jongin" Sehun said quietly, "and they were caught in the forest, and Jongin's dad was an official so he was ok, but what happened to Chanyeol?"
"Don't Sehun."
"Because that will be me Joonmyeon, your daddy isn't going to protect me is he? He'll save you but I can end up like Chanyeol imprisoned for life." Sehun said and Joonmyeon shook his head. "You can't guarantee we'd make it."
"Fuck off Sehun. You just don't want to leave." he said rolling over so he was lying on his back instead of on his side stroking the other's cheek.
"Joonmyeon, you have to admit your plan isn't exactly well thought out."
"Yeah well I'm about to get matched so fuck you." he said quietly. Sehun left shortly after that, Joonmyeon knew it was his fault, he didn't know exactly why they were fighting so much. He knew that his imminent match was putting a lot of stress on them, but he didn't know why he cared so much about his match. All he'd wanted was Sehun, that's all he'd wanted since he was fifteen and they'd met in an after school club.
Joonmyeon was now twenty - three and still completely for the boy. He didn't even know why they were still together, it was quite common for kids in high school to have secret relationships but they were all changed, it was a government process, love was illegal. Making love was illegal. They were supposed to have a medical procedure when they got matched that would stop them being able to fall in love - and even before that they were not permitted to fall in love.
Joonmyeon knew why he wanted to run away, he didn't want to be changed. He didn't want to lose the way he felt when he looked at Sehun. He didn't want to change the way he felt when the other kissed him. He just wanted to run away, he needed to find a way for them to be together.
Together. Although the way Sehun was acting at the moment, it didn't look like there was even going to be a 'them' to run away. He was pretty sure he should just go alone, because he didn't want to be matched.
The next day, he told Sehun straight out that he was going to run away, whether he came or not. He didn't want to a live a life unable to love someone, unable to have a genuine relationships. He didn't want to be an empty shell when Sehun had made him so full and vibrant.
The day he'd arranged to run away he waited on the edge of the forest looking out, to see if Sehun would come. Just as he was about to turn Sehun turned up, and then smiled taking Joonmyeon's hand. "We have a minimum of five hours before someone notices one of us was missing." he said as they set off. They started off walking, knowing they were going to have to run later and they wanted to reserve their stamina.
"I roughly know the direction." Joonmyeon said as they sped up, they were aware that as soon as the police were called they wouldn't have that long before they started to check the forest because there was going to be someone who knew something about them, there was rumours throughout college that they were breaking the law and being together but no one could ever prove it. But them both running away on the same day was going to be too obvious for anyone to ignore.
Joonmyeon gave Sehun's hand a squeeze. They kept going, not stopping regardless of how tired they were, they couldn't stop. Not until they got to a colony, not until they found somewhere safe to hide. They didn't know what they were going to do if they got caught. They didn't even know where exactly they needed to go.
Joonmyeon knew that the colony had people near the woods to pick up the run aways, he knew that they had to get to them, they had to make it because he couldn't go back to living the life they had been and honestly, going back would mean getting caught and that would mean life in prison for at least Sehun.
It was about seven hours walking before they heard rustling behind them, they dropped each others hands and started running, Joonmyeon didn't care, they had to run, Sehun had to make it, they had to make it. They'd discussed what they were going to do and they both ran to a tree and climbed. Joonmyeon didn't look down, he didn't look to see if the police had made it to them.
Joonmyeon looked across as Sehun who'd also made it up the tree. He closed his eyes in relief making sure he was high enough not to be seen but low enough that a helicopter couldn't locate him. He didn't really know if this was going to work and he was sure that other couples must have tried this, so he was nervous.
He could hear the police under him but he didn't dare look down. "Yeah, it was the mayor's son, ran off with some boy." he heard the police talking. He blushed a little as they talked about the boys coming from mis-matching classes, that even if one was a girl they'd never have been matched. He wanted to defend their love - but he knew that would get them arrested.
He looked across as Sehun, and Sehun just shook his head, as if he could read Joonmyeon's mind. Sehun just sat there listening, waiting to see when they'd leave. They heard them walk past and Sehun shook his head, mouthing they had to wait until they came back to leave.
It was about two hours that they sat in the trees before they came down and gave each other a quick kiss, before they continued running. They breathed out in relief when they reached the forest edge, but there was no colony to be seen. Sehun looked at Joonmyeon and they linked hands not sure what they had to do now.
Joonmyeon slowly began walking with Sehun, praying that someone was going to arrive and take them to safety, knowing they were still at risk out here. Joonmyeon was about to start crying when they saw someone walking towards them. They gripped each other's hand tightly. "You run aways?" the man said and they nodded. "Come with me." he said.
They walked behind, only speaking when they were asked questions, what their names were, the fact that they were together, their age, the fact that Joonmyeon was going to be matched that week if they hadn't run away.
The commune was nice. It was quaint, and they were given a place to stay together. They smiled, they were able to kiss and hold each other all night if they wanted to. They were allowed to be themselves and be in love and that was liberating.
Sehun was happy that they'd made it, but still afraid of the police continuing to come after them because of who Joonmyeon was. He smiled a little, noticing that Joonmyeon had changed his name to 'Suho'. He was nobody here, and they were just two boys who'd fallen in love, they way it was supposed to be.
The way it had always been.
The way it would continue to be.
And Society couldn't stop them.
