Summary: When Tao took the job as Defence against the Dark Arts teacher he did not expect to find his life mate sat at the back of the class.

Tao smiled at Kris, “we made it,” he smiled and then pressed a kiss to the other’s cheek. “I’m a defence against the dark arts teacher at Hogwarts.” he beamed, “thank you for turning down the position at Durmstrang for me. I know you wanted to go back to where we studied, well where we met.”
“We only met because they assumed that as we were both Chinese descent and therefore spoke the same language, plus you transferred from the best school in Asia.” Kris said as he unpacked, “plus teaching potions here isn’t too bad. I was just lucky there was an opening here.”
“Yeah, it’s easier to teach here if you’ve been educated in Europe.” Tao said with a smile, “Of course they wanted you for potions Kris, you know you’re famous right?” He said with a laugh, he could hardly believe that out of the couple it was only him that was half-veela, Kris had such a hold on certain people it was unbelievable, although Tao was able to appreciate the others attractiveness.
“Since I met you, you’ve always wanted to teach at Hogwarts since only British born wizards can attend and you are Chinese born.” Kris said with a small smile.
“Remember the tri-wizard tournament?”
“Of course I do, I was the representative for Durmstrang.” Kris smiled, “And you attended the yule ball with the guy who was representing Hogwarts.” he smiled dropped, “although that was how I found out you were gay.”
“You went with a girl from Beauxbatons.” Tao was quick to shoot back, “I cried all that night, because I thought you liked me and then I’d gone and made you hate me because I’d gone with another guy.” Tao smiled, moving to give Kris a tight hug, and then a gentle kiss was placed on his lips.
“You know I watched you and him dancing and I told myself I was never going to watch you dancing with another man.” Kris said quietly. “And so far I’ve not let you dance with someone else, I’ve got you by my side.” he smiled kissing the other again.

Tao smiled as he walked into his first class, he stood at the front and wrote, professor Huang Zi Tao on the board. He turned back and looked at the class. He rolled his eyes when he saw a group of boys at the back laughing. “Perhaps you’d like to see me in detention.” Tao said sternly. “Name?” he said pointing at one of the boys, who just smirked.
“Oh Sehun. Hufflepuff.” he said before rolling his eyes “you’re also going to have to fight the potions professor for me in detention because he already gave me one.” he said before going back to laughing with his friends.
“Well, Oh Sehun. You will come to my detention after finishing detention with Professor Wu. I-” he stopped, he looked at Sehun for the first time, their eyes meeting. He knew what it was, he had found his mate. Not all veela’s did, but some did, it wasn’t like normal relationships. He loved Kris, he really did - but a mate was different. It was something he couldn’t control a feeling that would never die. Although it didn’t mean he had to act on it - and he wouldn’t be acting on it.
He decided not to tell Kris at lunch that he had seen a boy who he was pretty sure was his mate - there was no need to worry the other or freak him out, he didn’t need anyone to be thinking anything about this other than him. He wasn’t going to risk his job teaching in Hogwarts over this, he was going to be professional, just because he was a veela didn’t mean he didn’t know how to control his urges - he hated the way he was always seen a veela when it came to a fatal flaw. Tao sighed as he sat in his office waiting for Sehun to arrive, although he didn’t want to see him at the same time. He wanted to avoid Sehun as much as possible, if he could keep away from the boy he wouldn’t have to deal with the mate issue.
He found himself staring at Sehun, he found everything falling around him in his mind, all he could see was Sehun. And that was frustrating, it was something he couldn’t control and it was stronger than just thinking oh he’s cute, it was more like oh he’s cute, my world has stopped turning and all I can think about it being with him. And when you had a long term boyfriend, who was technically your fiance these were not the kind of thoughts that you should be having. You should be thinking about him, and marry him.
That night, Tao just lay next to Kris looking at him, “I love you” Tao said quietly, leaning over to give him a kiss. He did love him, nothing could take that away, but a mate was different. He could love Kris but have a mate elsewhere and he would be inexplicably drawn to his mate despite not wanting to be, it wasn’t a choice and right now it felt like a prison sentence. Tao sighed as Kris stroked his cheek gently, “Kris.” he said quietly. “We’ve never talked about the fact I’m half veela.”
“We don’t need to talk about it Tao, I don’t care if you’re half veela or half dwarf, you’re the man I love.” Kris said with a small sigh.
“You know, Veela’s have mates.”
“I do, and I know I’m not yours.” Kris said quietly. “But I do know, you can choose not to be with your mate, and that it doesn’t change your ability to love me. So why is it important?”
“So if I find my mate you would be ok with that?”
“Because you’ll choose me, I hope, and if you don’t, I want you to be happy Tao. Is something bothering you? Do you want to find your mate?” Kris said, moving a little, tugging Tao’s leg over his waist and giving him a quick kiss. It was so Kris to assume that Tao was thinking he wanted to find his mate, not that he’d already found him.

Tao had been trying his best to ignore his mate, to act as if Sehun wasn’t around. He was really trying to fight his instinct. To make matters worse Kris had had a family issue that had caused him to have to go home. Tao was alone and honestly it was making it harder to ignore his mate instinct. To make matters even worse Sehun had shown up at his door, after lights out. Tao looked at the boy. “Professor Huang.” he said quietly, “I know you’re half veela.” Tao just looked at the other and then sighed, he didn’t deny what he was but he did find some wizards did look down on them. Sehun pushed into the room, as if he was something important to say. Sehun stared at the bed, “You sleep in the same bed as Professor Wu?” Tao nodded, again nothing he was going to deny. “Does he know I’m your mate?”
“Sehun?”
“What? How do I know I’m your mate?” he looked at Tao, “I’m about to take N.E.W.T’s in both defence against the dark arts and magical creatures, how would I not know anything about Veelas?” He said before looking at Tao who was just eyeing him. “And apparently I know more about veelas than you do. I might not be a veela but I feel your mated instinct, it actually affects me.” Sehun stepped closer to Tao, and sighed, “I’m 18, Zi Tao, I’m legal, and the dreams you’re giving me from me being your mate is driving me insane.”
“It’s normal for students to attracted to teachers.” Tao mumbled, he felt the other get even closer.
“Zi Tao, I know this isn’t just a crush, and it isn’t because you’re just a veela, it’s a mate bond.” He kept moving closer, he leant up, and before Tao could even react he kissed him. He kept his mouth on Tao, holding him close and refusing to back off. Tao pulled back - there was no denying that was his mate. “You know it’s not good for either of us if you deny your mate instinct.”
“I have a long term boyfriend Sehun, and you’re a student, and I’m a professor, we’re not doing this.” Tao said turning away from Sehun, “I’m not going to act on my mate instinct. What do you want me to do take you in the prefects bathroom? We can’t do anything, we can’t be together, no matter how much it hurts. I love Kris - Professor Wu. I am in love with him.” Tao looked at Sehun, “I was waiting for him to propose. He meant the world to me.”
“Was? Meant?” Sehun said with a smirk, Tao nearly let out a frustrated growl, he was tired and English wasn’t his first language and the last thing he needed was for the boy to be doing this to him. He was beginning to think he was being cursed with his mate.
“I meant mean. Sehun. I love him.”
“Yeah, you keep saying, but who are you really trying to convince? Because I don’t care if you love him or not, I want you to do me all night.”
“I’m not going to do that.”
“Zi Tao.”
“Professor Huang.” Tao said looking at the other, sighing when the other stepped closer, he knew the proximity wasn’t helping him deny the mate bond. He wanted to, he wanted to kiss Sehun, to take his pyjamas off and slowly make love to him. He wanted to give the other everything, and he knew it wasn’t right. “We really can’t” He said quietly.
“But you want to.” Sehun said quietly. “And I want to. I know you’re dating Professor Wu, and I don’t want to break you two up, but Zi Tao, we’re made for each other. We’re made to fit together.” He stepped closer and wrapped his arms around Zi Tao. “Our bodies are made to fit, you are the only guy I can be with, and I’m the only man for you.” He said quietly. “I’ve had boyfriends before, so trust me it’s not you, I graduate so soon Zi Tao, please wait for me. Please let me try to make you happy, please, Professor Wu can never look after you, or make you feel the way I can.” Tao just let the boy hold him, holding the boy back, Sehun let his hands wander, cupping Tao’s butt gently, before giving him a quick kiss. “I have to get back to my dorm if you’re not going to let me stay the night.” Sehun said quietly, and Tao dropped his hands, the other gave his butt a squeeze.
“Sehun” Tao hissed. “Behave, go back to your dorm.” Sehun left, and Tao felt relieved. Although anxious for Kris’ return.
When Kris came back Tao smiled, kissing the boy gently. “Kris can we talk?” he asked quietly, and they both went in and sat down, looking at each other. “I’ve found my mate, Yi Fan.” he said quietly.

Two years later, Tao woke up, Sehun curled into his chest. He woke the other up with a small kiss. “Get up Sehun.” he said softly “We have a long day.” he added, getting up, pulling on his clothes and then going to make his hair look perfect while Sehun just watched, not making any more to try to get ready in any way. “Oh by the way you’re my date to the Yule ball tonight.” Tao said as if it was nothing, it was actually the first time they were going to be together in public, Tao had been afraid of his reputation.
“You do know, Kris is here, right?” Sehun mumbled quietly, he was training to be a magical creatures teacher and was a teachers aide of some kind - that Tao didn’t question. “I know... you didn’t want him to find out.”
“It’s been two years Sehun, it’s time he knew.”
