So um... last week, we found out that UCSD and the union finally agreed on something about the temporary laid offs. Yesterday morning, we had a meeting about it. Someone from HR even said that they have a signed agreement with the union (and I have absolutely no reason what so ever to think that this person would lie).

About 5 mintues ago, I got this e-mail from CUE:
To all clerical employees,
Some UCSD departments here have prematurely issued notices about a new temporary layoff plan before the details have been agreed to by both sides. CUE representatives are meeting with Labor Relations next week and we will send out information after that meeting. We plan to do this by Wednesday, Feb. 10.
Please forward any temporary layoff notices to our local office at info@cuesd.net, or fax them to us at 619-296-6108.
Thanks for your patience and assistance with this. Please feel free to share this with other CUE employee that are paid monthly.

Dude, what the...

Basically, nothing has changed from what the UC decided early on (like, a year ago): take X% pay cut over Y amount of time, and get X% time off. Union has done NOTHING but delay. The only "good" thing that resulted from this delay (NOT the negotiations, the delay) is that UC was running out of time to adjust for the deficit, so UC was forced to open up more options for CUE employeses, like the START program, where employees "voluntarily" agrees to pay cuts and time off in lieu of whatever UCSD and the union finally agrees on.

We now have the opportunity to opt into temporary laid offs, which I don't see why anyone would do since it affects sick/vac time accrual and retirement benefits. As far as I know, we can apply for unemployment, but there's no guarantee we'll get it since we're guaranteed to be hired back by UC (which the union doesn't know, and swears up and down that we can get unemployment).

Even if we consider all these new options as a good thing, it still doesn't justify the anxiety brought onto the affected employees by the uncertainty. We knew it was coming all along. We knew the union is all bark, no bite (no brain either, for that matter) and can't change the situation. It's extremely unfair for the union, that even if the union thinks it's doing good, to cause stress to its members, especially in these times when spouses and family members are still losing jobs.

CUE makes me sick.
