Apartment (before)

I took some "before" pictures of my apartment living room and hallway.

The space is *tiny* so it's really hard to get a decent shot, but I think you get the general idea with these.  It's very... white.  Which I like.  I like white, but even for me... it's a little white.

Pros of the Space:
- Still digging the walnut stained floors.
- The art deco faux fireplace.
- Windows allow in good natural light.

Personal Problems I'm having regarding the Space:
- It's small and square, thus I'm already falling into the habit of pushing the furniture against the wall.  This is a no-no.
- I'm falling into my habit of buying everything white.  This is fine in moderation, but the room needs color.
- The windows are not even.  If you look at them you see that the window to the far right (by the desk) is a single window which is not even with the rest of them.  I'm having trouble deciding how I should put up the curtains.
- There is a weird nook thing right when you walk in (this is not pictured).  It's no more than 17 inches wide and about a foot deep.  It's driving me insane.
- The wall are drywall and I'm afraid to hang things in fear of tearing a giant hole through it.  I had plaster walls before that had about 100 years of paint layers an them... The Hammer of Thor couldn't ruin those walls.  These are kind of fragile, it seems.

Easy things that I know will make a big difference (I just need to motivate myself):
- Commit to buying an area rug.
- Hang up the curtains.
- Buy a clock for the mantle... It's so bare!
- Prettify my bookshelf/fireplace instead of shoving things in willy-nilly
- Plants!

And

So, in summary, my apartment is still not homey or how I want it yet.  I think those few easy things I listed above are going to make a big difference, I just need to motivate myself to do it (and kill the giant spider living on my ceiling!).

What things do you think make a big difference in a home?  In terms of a homey feel?
