Chapter 1 Chapter 2
I wake up to Ryan’s body draped over mine. Surprisingly, I slept better than I ever had in my life. I have to get up though. I slowly snake my way through Ryan’s limbs and get out of bed. Luckily he doesn’t wake up. I grab a clean set of clothes for the day and head into the bathroom. I start to collect my thoughts about all of this. Ryan, who is a prostitute, wants to try a non-sexual relationship with me. I am attracted to him. Ryan is a really gorgeous guy, but then there is Jack. I have a slight obsession with. He’s friends with Ryan. There are a lot of things wrong with that. First, Ryan doesn’t know that I stalk. Jack doesn’t know either. I really don’t love Ryan, but I’m sure that I could with time. I should just give Ryan what he wants without the sex. He’s worth it. Besides, Jack is just a mystery to me, while I know Ryan.
I get into the shower and start to clear my head of any contradicting thoughts. After I am clean, I put on my clothes and go back into the room. Ryan is still sleeping comfortably on my bed. He looks so innocent and beautiful like that. I can’t help but stare. I pick up my camera and take a few snapshots of him just sleeping. I would take a few more, but the film runs out. I guess I’ll have to buy some more. That was my last roll.
I start to get my things ready for school. I make sure I have all of my supplies. As I am slipping on my shoes, Ryan wakes up. I smile slightly at him.
“Morning gorgeous,” I say.
Ryan rubs his eyes making him look irresistibly cute. “Morning. Are you heading to school?”
“Yeah. I have a lot of things to do. Fell free to stay here as long as you want. Anything in the fridge is yours to eat or drink.”
“I probably won’t be here when you get back,” he says. “I don’t want to freeload.”
I give him a small hug and make my way through the house to the outside. I start my car and head for school. On my way, I buy five more rolls of film for my camera and a bite to eat. When I arrive at the campus, I go directly to my first class. Of course, it’s photography. I head t the red room and start to develop my pictures. They all turn out really great. I can only stare at the beauty that twenty-eight pictures hold. The last eight are of Ryan, but they are of the best I have seen of him. However, I can’t keep my eyes from going to the ones of Jack. I pick the best two pictures, one of each person, to enlarge them. When everything is done, I leave the room and start to head outside to get more snapshots of pretty things. I sit down in the middle of the courtyard under a tree just looking around through the lens of the camera. I spot Jack heading this way. As he gets closer, I take a few pictures of him. He stops in front of me with a smile.
“I would say ‘take a picture, it’ll last longer,’ but you’re already doing that.”
I mutter an apology and stand up. I start to walk away from him but his hand grabs my wrist.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” I say.
I continue walking away. That was definitely embarrassing. After school, I go directly to work. After work, I take my car back to my place and take a taxi to my usual bar. A lot of people here are starting to call me an alcoholic. Maybe I am, but what’s it matter. Everyone has their fix and so what if mine happens to be photography and alcohol. At least I’m not a violent drunk. I take a taxi home when I feel I’ve had enough. Of course, I stagger all the way to the door. I fumble with my keys and enter my place tired. I head to the couch and slump over it. I sit up and flip on the TV and stare at it blankly. I wanted to at least sober up before I go to sleep. I didn’t need a hangover. I start to think of Jack. I didn’t even want to follow him today. I saw my fair share of him today and he spoke to me. That was weird.
I hear the door open and see Ryan. I don’t immediately get up so he comes to me. He plops down next to me and lies his head in my lap.
“Hey...” I say initiating conversation.
He doesn’t respond but by his breathing I could tell he was crying.
“Are you okay?”
“They didn’t take no for an answer.”
I run my hand through his hair to comfort him. I don’t know what to do. I pull him into a hug. I whisper delicate things to him that seem to calm him down. When his crying is reduced to small huffs, I pull away.
“You okay?”
“Yeah...”
“You going to tell me what happened?”
“Nothing happened. It was just so...overwhelming at how they were treating me. I was evaluating myself and it really isn’t worth it. I don’t want this life anymore. I mean...Jack just told me he’s transferring to a new college. A four year college. He’s doing something with his life while I’m doing nothing. I’m not happy with my life like he is. It probably shows how much of a nothing I am.”
“That’s not true, Ryan. You are a wonderful person. If you were nothing, do you think I’d be here with you right now, let alone your friend. Just tell me what happened.”
Ryan pulls out some money. 250 dollars to be exact.
"This is what two guys thought I was worth and they handled me like a rag doll. I’m worth more than that, right?”
I nod.
“Why should I put a price on my body if that is going to happen.”
“There shouldn’t be a price, no matter how others treat you.”
He looks up at me. “You want me to stop, don’t you?”
I nod. “I would feel better and I won’t have to worry so much about you.”
He cuddles more into me. I stroke his head and he dances his fingers on my chest. This felt so nice. Just me and him sitting here doing absolutely nothing.
“I’m glad I can count on you. You’ll help me find a job, right?”
“Of course.”
“Thanks.”
He gets up from me. “I’m going to take a shower.”
“Alright.” As he’s leaving, I stand up and catch his wrist. “My answer is yes. I’ll date you.”
His expression changes to happy in a split second. He gives me a back cracking hug.
“Thank you for giving me a chance at a better life.”
“Thanks for convincing me.”
