Several thigns been going on over the last several days. Went to an ENT today to have my hearing checked. I've noticed over the last 2-3 years that if I'm in a crowded room with a lot of background noise, I have trouble hearing people who are standing directly in front of my talking to me (and it's even worse if we're around a dinner table and someone on the other side of the table is telling a story). Anyway, I was told I needed to go see an ENT to ensure everything was ok. I had a hearing test before I went into the doctor. The first thing they did was check for wax. None in either ear, so I checked out there. They then put me in a sound proof room and stuck small speakers in my ears. I was given a button and asked to press the button no matter how soft it was. I don't normally have tinitis, however sitting there in the room I started getting a ringing in my ears while I was trying to concentrate on the noise. Of course, being that I work in the medical field, unintentionally I was guessing of when the noises *should* be and listening for them harder during those times.. Of course, it always seemed to occur during those times. So, I had to make a determination if I was actually hearing the noise or guessing that I heard it (it didn't help that the noises appeared to be in a rhythem). ACK! Anyway, I was then instructed to say words after the tech stated them. As she stated a word, the tone for the next word would be a lesser decibel. The process kept repeating until I wasn't able to distinguish any words anymore. The next test in the sound proof booth was similar to the first, however another contraption was placed on my head. The final test was one where I was able to come out of the booth and another device was clipped to my shirt and a contraption was placed into my ear. I just heard many different tones and it apparently tested the functioning of my ear drum. After completing these tests and going back to the waiting room, I was asked to go to another room where the ENT met me. He informed me that my tests came out normal for "someone your age". He indicated that the last test that was preformed showed that I had the startings of hearing loss in my right ear, however it was nothing to worry about at this stage. I am just suppose to come back every 5 years and have it checked out. So, apparently individuals "my age" do have difficulties hearing in crowded, noisy areas.
Another amusing antedote was that Bear informed me that he wanted to ride the 150 mile MS bike-a-thon. Training rides started this week, however we didn't believe our bikes were ready to take the initial trails because they hadn't been serviced for a while. Bear took us to a bike shop that was down the street from us and we were instructed to bring our bikes in as soon as we could. We did...Now then, I'll admit that my bike is by no means a racing bike. I never intended it to be. It's more of a bike around the neighborhood type of bike from Huffy. The guy in the bike repair shop saw our bikes and immediately told us that my bike was crap ("No grasshopper..you cannot ride that piece of crap in a race...") and that we needed to go out and buy a $399 bike, both for myself and Bear, immediately. He indicated that he could tune up our bikes for us for $50, however we wouldn't be happy once we had our first training rides and thus felt that we really needed to get new bikes. So, Bear and I excused ourselves and went out of the bike shop laughing at the silliness of the mechanic.
Other bit of news, Bear's birthday is this week, so I'm trying to get the week nailed down as to what is happening. Supposably he's mentioned that his parentes may be here, but there is no definative plans. This puts a bit of a kink in the schedule because I don't know if I should get the house ready for guests or not.. Coupled on top of that this being Halloween week and I haven't done *anything* to either decorate, means that the week is going to be crazy.
Oh, other good bit of news, our friend who moved back to Indianapolis got a job last week! Yeah! The other amusing bit of it is that we're fairly certain that it is the job that another one of my friends vacated to take a later shift. Guess everything has a reason, eh?
