Although we've been living here for 8 months, we decided to pretend to be tourists for the last few days. It started on Tuesday when we climbed a mountain. The mountain is where San Miniato church and Piazzale Michelangelo are. We could have taken an easier route that was more direct, but we decided to go the hard way. And of course when I say decide I really mean we got lost. It was great though - we went up really really really steep hills and down steep hills and saw all sorts of the countryside in Florence. It was beautiful. And we were rewarded deliciously with a spectacular view of Florence.
Yesterday we took a bus with Caitlyn and David to Fiesole, one of the most beautiful towns I've ever seen. No kidding - this place was incredible. It is perched on the other mountain surrounding Florence, so we got the exact opposite view that we had seen the day before. Only yesterday it was beautiful out and you could smell all the flowers around. The air was crisp and it was sunny and I was in heaven. We met some fun Americans who we chatted with for a while, they took our picture and we took ours. One of the highlights of the day was the bus ride home, where 3 kids squished into the tiniest hole in the bus (yep, a hole) right behind us and commenced to invent raps, even incorporating various phrases that we were saying. They were hilarious and as they exited the bus they thanked us for not stabbing them! Ha!
Today Kelsie and I packed up a box of our things that we're not bringing with us to Spain and Portugal and shipped it back to Guelph. Heads up Parsons: we mailed it to your house! And it is heavy! Tonight we'll say good bye to some of our friends and then commence packing the rest of our stuff. Oh, and cleaning our apartment....right.
This afternoon we went to San Lorenzo church and Medici chapel and saw the relics there. In the chapel of Princes I was surprised by the abundance of flower arrangements inside the church. I don't think they were there when Kelsie visited it before. I really liked it there. After we wandered to the Academia so I could see David. Holy cow do I ever understand why they say Italians like chaos. It was nuts! There were people pushing everywhere. I was really glad to have our friends of the uffizi pass which let us cut the insane line. Yep, apparently people had been waiting for 3 hours!!! And they still weren't at the front. Kelsie and I just strolled up, waiting about 20 minutes, and then went right on in. Seeing David was pretty neat, but I can understand why people are disappointed when they see it. Especially if those people have been waiting for 3 hours!
After the Academia we wandered to our favourite gelato spot to get a cup. It was a great way to end the day - sitting in the warm outdoors with a small band playing right beside us. Quite a nice way to remember Italy, don't you think?
