As most of you know Kelsie and I only have two more weeks here in Florence. Then we're off to explore some other areas of Europe. First we'll spend a day in Milan, then 3 days in Barcelona, followed by about 3 weeks in Portugal. I'm pretty excited by it. In honour of there being only 2 weeks left I decided to make good on my promise to myself to write -er, type, the observations I've bade since being in Italy. In the spirit of diplomacy, none of my observations should be taken as negative or positive observations on my behalf. You, however, are free to take them as you wish. To be honest most of my observations will be fashion related. The rest of them will mostly be related to mannerisms. I'll write them as I think of them so it might take a few entries!
The list begins:
Music:
*If you're dancing at a club you will most likely hear only music written between 1992 and 1997. I'm talking Snap and Technotronic here! There is also a pretty good chance you will hear the same music in a cafe while you sip your cappuccino
*It is an indisputabile fact that Madonna is the greatest artist who has ever lived
Weather (also very closely related to fashion):
*It is never as warm out as you perceive it to be. The evidence is in the fact that people wear their furs, down jackets, leather and scarves no matter the temperature.
*Even if it is really cloudy out you should wear sunglasses. In fact, you should wear them inside at all times as well. Those UV rays can get through EVERYTHING.
*The umbrella is more than just a protector against the rain. It is a weapon to be held out to the side of you at all times, or at least when people walk by.
Fashion:
Oh where do I start!
*There are rules to follow when it comes to fashion
*It is never okay to wear running shoes, unless you want the world to know you're a tourist. If you MUST wear them (ie. in the gym) they had better be spiffy and preferably designer ones and made by Prada or Escada or something.
*It is never okay to wear flip flops unless you want the world to know you're a tourist
*Fashion rules over sensibility. stilettos are the heel of choice, and women here are adept and navigating the cobblestones at a swift pace while avoiding the cracks and thus avoiding broken ankles. This rule may also explain the fur coats in summer.
*The more fur the better.
*Mullets and Mowhawks are awesome on everybody from children to adults.
*It is perfectly acceptable to look ridiculous in a colour so long as it is in style. This applies also to fashion in general such as pantyhose that stop at your shin.
Other:
*Italians are some of the most modest people in the world when it comes to knowledge. Everyone I've met who says they can't speak English speaks better than I do. And they know bigger words than I do. Sure, they have a thicker accent but they're smarter than me.
*Canada makes the best winter jackets in the world because we have a cold climate and know how to protect ourselves. Why else would there be Canadian flags on all the winter coats?
That's all I can think of now......I'll try and think of more non-fashion related ones
