Luna's (Not So) Lunes Linkies - Round 19.5 (Science Content Day)

Jun 08, 2008 03:46

In case you've missed what's going on...

After the excitement of yesterday, perhaps it's for the best that today is a somewhat more mellow topic. Today is my day to catch up ON THE WORLD OF SCIENCE (because what's a better topic for a Sunday, anyway). Some of these are lulz-worth but for the most part, I think most of the links fall under the category of "kinda neat."

  • Man, I've had this link almost as long as the linkies folder has existed. Super jazzed on this one: snorting a brain chemical may replace sleep. Not that I find this 100% likely, I glee-d a bit anyway.

  • This one's been all over the news, but it's somewhat links worthy (I just wish I put it up when this was still, y'know, news): Cow-human cross embryo lives three days. I think a great number of people mis-interpret this as trying to make a mooing-Frankenstein's monster or something.

  • Here's a study on the correlation between intelligence and intercourse. I've... really got nothing.

  • The title of this page is epic: A Good Poop: Strange Seizure Stimuli. It lists a mess of scientific papers (which, if you click any of them, provide just a paragraph each of background material) but you get the idea by just looking at the TITLES of the things.

  • The real ice man kicks so much ass: one day, he decided to go about in artic temperatures with very little on, and has not only survived, but thrived. First of all... how does one have a random thought like that and second: I totally read a horror story when I was younger that sorta started like that.

  • The only bad thing about science-day linkies is that the titles of the pages are usually so efficient, I don't have to do a thing other than copy and paste the title by means of description. Here's a woman who visited her own heart at an exhibit.

  • See, in intro-biology, we would call things related to this topic "free gay fly porn sex." Study finds in fruit flies, homosexuality is biological but not hard-wired.

  • Ever have a hard time remembering who the post-man is? Blame the Monkeysphere.

  • Dubiously SFW, but it's Sunday and you shouldn't be working anyway: here are some beautiful and morbid anatomical charts from feudal Japan (with even more pictures here).

  • I... score. Someone deliver this kid his intertubes: how wearing underwear led to increased medieval literacy.

  • Yay! Mind control!! How hairworms charms a grasshopper into cheerfully committing it's own suicide. Well... maybe not cheerfully. I don't think I've ever heard of a cheerful grasshopper.

  • This is ACTUALLY pretty new news, so hopefully you haven't heard this one already: Jupiter has a new spot! The best part? It's apparently playing chicken with the big red spot. The bad thing? There's already "Red Spot" and "Red Spot, Jr." What are they gonna name this one?

  • I just about died when I saw the title of this one: "Giant Interstellar Void Baffles Astronomers, Receives Boring Name."

  • What? WHAT. Appendix removed through mouth. WHAT. Actually, no. That would be trippy as hell if it weren't for a follow up article: Appendix removed through vagina. Pardon my French but FUCK. NO.

  • And to end, check out Paleo-Future: 2063 A.D. It's available for free download in .pdf format. Summary from the page: "2063 A.D. was a book published in 1963 by General Dynamics Astronautics. The book asked politicians, military commanders and scientists to speculate as to where humanity would be, a hundred years hence, in the great push towards space." It's certainly worth a skim. Sure, some of the stuff is wildly outrageous but a few of the guesses seem to be pretty spot on for stuff that already happened. And hey: we've still got another 55 years, so I can't be one to talk.
  • word prompt, douchebag, wtf, sex, science, space, anatomy, animals, it's da future! :o, creepy crawlies, death, photos, links tiem, omgwant, zombies/vampires, drugs, ways in which they fail
