Christmas Decorating: You're Doing It Wrong

Okay, maybe not you personally, but there are an awful lot of people who are. There's a house I drive past on my way to class that has a solid mass of lighted snowflakes on the roof, the entire house outlined in lights, the entire fence line solidly covered in lights, and every square inch of the yard filled with lighted yard decorations. The entire property is such a solid mass of Christmas lights that it's impossible to make out any individual decoration. This house can be seen from space. Sometimes, less is more.

There's another house about a mile down the road from the one above that has a curving tree-lined driveway. The owners decided to completely and thickly outline their driveway in colored strings of lights. Flashing colored strings of lights. I don't mean chasing lights, or those strings where the bulbs go off and on individually for a kind of twinkling effect. Oh, no. The entire strand of lights goes off and on at the same time. All of the strands go off and on at the same time. Since there are no streetlights in the area, the basic effect is something like this: *FLASH* There's the driveway. *FLASH* Hey, where'd it go? *FLASH* Oh, there it is. *FLASH* Now it's gone again.

I have a neighbor who decorated her Christmas tree with lights like that, so the tree is constantly appearing and disappearing from her window. Who invented these light strings? Can I hit them? Just a little bit?
