Why are there so few strong female archetypes in movies/tv/books today? Because as a society, North America still cannot really handle a female that is female and strong.
Is it that, or because most of the writers of movies and TV are men and can't write female characters to save their lives?
But are they truly female characters, or are they just "men with breasts," if you know what I mean? If they were real-life people, would you look at them and think that they were over-compensating?
One can have a strong female character who is still clearly female (eg. Ripley, Buffy) or one can have a strong character who just has breasts tacked on by the writer but who isn't particularly female (which is how I think of Xena, though I admit I haven't watched very much of the show).
And yes, I know I'm on very thin ice with this comment. :) It's just that I think that it's true that most men (admittedly, not all) don't really understand women very well.

Ripley - male author
Buffy - male author
Xena - more than half the writers are female.
See where I'm going with this?
