Natalie stands outside the elevator in the car garage on the floor Ani parked on every day. She smiles as Ani rushes past her in her transporter, “Took you long enough.”
“Shut up. You would have taken longer.” Ani wears a dark pair of sunglasses, her messenger bag lying across her chest with the bag itself resting on her left thigh. She smirks, “You woke me on my day off. That’s like telling the gods to…not be gods.” She glances around the rest of the garage, noticing the other transports as they park, “Having the girls track me again?”
“I wanted to greet you, give you this.” She hands her octagonal file, which the other woman promptly tucks under her arm.
“What is it?” She pulls her glasses from her face as they enter the building, tossing them onto her desk, with the folder when they reach it.
Natalie folds her arms, watching her a moment as she removes her coat and gets comfortable, “You know, you could just read it.”
“Yeah, but that would be too sensible. Waste all this paper when you could just tell me.”
She shakes her head, sitting on the edge of the desk, watching her, “We believe there to be some suspicious movements in Caprica by some secular groups in the outer ridge of Triton Forrest.” She opens the folder as it lies flat on the table, pointing to areas of an aerial photo that was taken, “We believe them to be a group called One True God. Lately they’ve been taking more militant efforts in proclaiming their messages. Obviously, this is a problem being close to the President’s residence.” She points to another area.
“Is the President there now or is he in the city?”
“We wouldn’t be worried about it if he were in the city.” Natalie smirks.
Ani nods, “What’s the mission?”
“There have been recent break-ins in both the President’s home and the lower levels of his office. Thankfully, the office break-ins have been during times that he is not there. We believe the group is enlarging their horizons and making friends inside the buildings. You need to figure it out and flush them while gaining as much intelligence as possible. There will be other people working with you, but you will be commanding this mission, Colonel.”
She sighs, leaning back in her chair, “You mean business…you used my rank and stuff
“I’ll use your rank all I want. In this building, you are not Ani Kosakowski whose family roots are deeply dug into Canceron logic. You are not a young woman who lives alone in an apartment with her dog and sleeps too late on her days off.“ She folds her legs at the knees, “You are Colonel Gaia and you will be treated as such, do you understand?”
“Yes, ma’am.” She salutes, mostly playfully, “Technically, I outrank you.”
“In this building, I am your boss.”
Ani smirks, watching her, “We never get to work together.”
“And we never will if I can help it. You’re a pain in the ass.” She stands, leaving the office.
She sits up more, laying the pictures out on her desk better. Her process tells her to study the forest floor and the Presidential Offices layout before taking anything on. Know where they can come from if they decide to make good on their threats. She stares at them, needing to memorize them in the back of her mind. Needing to be able to see them in her sleep and needing to feel like she knows them better than her own home. She collects them, putting them back into the folder, and standing. Ani slowly walks to the window and peers through it, at the people bustling below.
