Original vs Fannish Writing

Jan 04, 2013 00:18

When writing fanfic I can turn out 2 - 3k in a free afternoon/evening no trouble.

When writing my novel, I can spend all day on it, as I did today, and only come out with 1.5k.

Conclusion: original fiction is a lot harder than I thought it would be, despite all my previous (fanfic) writing experience.

I mean, this is obvious if you think about it - locations, history, culture, characters all need creating from scratch. I suppose I just thought that, once I was as far in as I am now, I would have a good enough handle on the world to pick up the pace more. I would love, for example, to be able to churn out more than a single chapter a month. As it turns out, you never actually stop slowly revealing information, and it all needs to be eked out of my brain. What is interesting is that the easiest thing to write by far is conversations between my main characters. I think that means I've got them down well. That's a very pleasant feeling, actually :)

(And no, there isn't a point to this post, just admiring the fluff).
