December looms again

Nov 20, 2010 12:20

So, December is approaching.  A time when the sun dies, Canada does its imitation of Dante's ninth level of hell, and our vitamin D levels bring us perilously close to developing rickets.  Due to these circumstances, our social outings must be chosen with care, as each excursion brings with it the risk of broken hips and frostbite.  Or, given global warming, perhaps the risk of muddy shoes and vaguely hard nipples.

At this time of year you may be saying to yourself, "Margaret is so awesome!  What can I get for her to celebrate the birth of a Jewish peasant who has been conflated with Mithras, squeezed through the garlic press of  Greek philosophy, and then erroneously identified by some marginal Romans as the Jewish messiah?"
  • The answer, my lovelies, is cookbooks.  I'd love to have some more vegan cookbooks. Buy 'em, make 'em, whatever.  I'm especially fond of second-hand books (they already smell musty). I already have How It All Vegan, and The Vegan Cookbook.
  • Cosy murder mysteries.  If there's a houseparty at a remote mansion on a dark and stormy night, It's right up my alley.  If there's a body found on the hearthrug by the vicar, and the prime suspect bears a strong resemblance to a character from Clue (TM), then it's for me.
  • Books about murder mysteries are also great.  Something in the vein of Murder Ink, Murderess Ink, or the The Bedside, Bathtub & Armchair Companion to Agatha Christie.  I already have these three, and I'm not sure if there's any more untapped blood in that vein.
  • Books about Malcolm X.  I'm currently reading Malcolm X Speaks, which I bought at the Martin Luther King Jr. gift shop in Atlanta, and it is awesome.
  • Knitted slippers.  I love these.  I have hardwood floors and don't turn on my heat in the winter.  They can be as ugly as you like.
  • Hand-made presents: jewelry (I'm especially interested in wooden jewelry), movies, books, and whatnots of various descriptions. This category would include Psych fanfiction, if you're that sort of person.
  • Clothing is also welcome.  This can include new clothes, hand-made clothes, used clothes, hand-me-downs, etc.  I'm a lover of Value Village and similar stores.  I'm always looking for something warm, black, or slightly reminiscent of Lauren Bacall.  Just FYI, I wear a size 10 dress, a size 10 pant, a size 7 ring, a size 7.5 shoe, and a size medium top.  And I'm very much trying to dress appropriately for my age, which is 37. Ex: If it says "Juicy" across the ass, it's not for me.
  • As you may know, I don't actually need presents, and if it turns out that chronic poverty, forgetfulness, or parsimony prevents you from showering me in gifts, then there's no hard feelings.  Clumsy drunken come-ons are also appreciated.
Which brings me to parties.  Last year I attempted to organize, but was only too happy to shift my plans when foxesdaughter  announced her holiday plans, thus giving me the precious gift of not having to clean my bathroom.

So...if folks have plans for this year (or don't) let me know.  Thus far, I have commitments on the 4th, and the 23rd, and I am away in Halifax from the 9th to the 13th, attempting to bond with my parental units.  The 24th is a Friday and the 25th is a Saturday.  Mr. Pugh is likely working until 6 p.m. on the 24th.  I'm interested in gathering for food and booze and general holiday cheer.

Let's make this year totally not suck.  We have the power.
