The deadline for the first entry in the Last Author Standing Contest is today. I'm excited to see if I make it through to the next round or if I have written (cue ominous thunder) the worst entry. Of course even if it turns out that mine is the worst, that just means the others are really good, because I like my entry. I don't want to say too much about it because some things might give away which one is mine.
There may still be communities in sign-up mode, so check them out.
Here's the update community I'm worried about what kind of prompts I'll get and about trying too hard to push their boundaries. I need to balance my concern about writing something too obvious with my tendency to stray too far from the point. I don't want to be the guy who makes a casserole when the challenge was to create a dessert. Yes, I am currently watching a season of Top Chef that my boss loaned to me. Can you tell?
The voting will presumably start soon, at
the USA network LAS page. Anyone can vote (even me, although I can't vote for myself). So once it's up I'll remind people to bring their critical eyes to bear on the thing. I've read some of the entries in the other LAs communities, to get a sense of the format. And reading fanfiction for shows I haven't ever seen is weird. It makes me realize how much of fanfiction is shorthand. Like when we introduce a character in a regular story we usually have to describe them, say what they're like, etc., whereas in fanfiction sometimes we just have to identify them by name and the reader knows their character already and we can move on from there.
Do You Like To Write?
Like to write? Love any of the USA Network shows? Great! There is a new challenge, called
usanetwork_las , where you write a fanfic of at least 100 words every two weeks based on a different prompt. Then they get voted on and the person with the least votes is out that week and the person with the most is safe next week. Till you have one author standing who wins! What do you win? A snazzy graphic and a $10 GC to Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You don't even need to be a GREAT writer!
... who will come out on top?
