Today was an ok day. I had the house to my self this morning. Things were a lot quieter than normal. Didn't do anything out of the ordinary, just housework and surfed the web a bit. It's frustrating, I regularly see job ads in the Boston area for ESL teachers but for my current situation moving closer to Boston wouldn't get me much of a pay increase. Better to live in a cheaper area now and move closer to Boston once I have my master's degree and can get a real salary.
There was an ESL teacher job for Head Start near my house I was hoping to get but I didn't get it. However there is a highly paid tutoring company and I sent in an application and they want me to take the current version of the SAT at their office. It's not a guaranteed job but when a company writes back to you and tells you the next step it's a really good sign. Unfortunately there aren't too many morning jobs in the area that aren't pre-school. This specific tutoring job would be nights and weekends. Inshallah I'll do well enough to get hired. The test is on Sunday, November 2 (a week from yesterday). So I'll take a practice SAT test this week and hope all goes well on Sunday.
Things at work were fairly routine. One kindergarten kid went hysterical when I wanted to scold him for hitting another kid. All I wanted was for the kid to apologize and sit out for five minutes. And instead of being a quick and easy thing it took forever to calm the kid down enough so that I could dole out the minor punishment. Then very few kids cleaned up after themselves when they went home so clean up took longer than normal. And once the normal shift ended we had a staff meeting. The meeting was good in the sense that it got us all on the same page and could address classroom management issues. The drawback is the meeting got into my head and I was thinking about work issues for a good chunk of my ride home.
A positive of the meeting is that during the month of November I get to pick up a lot of extra hours, which also made me realize that a morning job with a different company might conflict with the times I'm needed for early release days. There is a chance my company will start offering a morning program at my location, which will make everything a lot easier. Until then I just need to hang on and hope that I land the tutoring job. And I also need to hope I can find a good summer job so I can save up money.
