I haven't forgotten that I now live in Pennsylvania again. Yes, so far, the winter has been unusually mild, but in this state, one can't assume that the rest of the winter is going to be the same. Because I remember the winters back in the early 1980's, I have a good stock of food and toilet paper in case I'm snowed in for a long spell in February ( Read more... )

I'm expecting a somewhat early spring this year -- not long ago I saw some mergansers on the river, and larger flocks of geese heading northward.

That said, the wooly-bear caterpillars predicted a severe start and finish, with a mostly mild middle to winter, so I think winter will get one last hurrah before yielding to consistently warmer temps.

I've got to get into the woods and find out if the skunk cabbage has started to come up yet! That's the REAL "first flower of spring." :)
