Lousy fresh produce

I have decided to stop buying almost all fresh fruit (in which I include tomatoes). The cherries I bought this week were the last straw. They had absolutely no flavor whatsoever: none. If they had been chopped into small pieces and I were blindfolded, I could not have told whether they were cherries, tasteless canteloupe, tasteless peaches, or what.

This summer, I have made three tries at tomatoes. The only one that was really good was a large "heirloom" tomato that I bought at the Wrightstown farmers' market; the price was $4 a pound, and the tomato was just under a pound, so that was one expensive tomato. All the others that I have bought in the past few weeks have had skins that a rhino would be proud of, and the interiors, though not tasteless right under the skin but not brimming with flavor either, were inedible at the core because of being hard and white, and in the seed pockets because of being unripe. None of them were cheap by any means.

I bought all of the tomatoes at the farmers' market and the cherries at a grocery store, also not inexpensive.

I'll have my fresh fruit in the form of juices again; that's how I was getting my vitamins before this summer, anyway. One may think that because I'm in my late 70s, my taste buds may have lost the ability to taste. I know that's not the case because the juices I buy still taste like the fruit from which they're made. Maybe the orchards and industrial-size farms are selling the best of their produce to juice companies. I drink a lot of the following juices: apple, pineapple, purple carrot, cherry, grapefruit, and V-8. They all taste wonderful to me. I wish fresh fruit still tasted as great.

food, pet peeves
