Today, I've really gotten going with Michael Palin's journals, this particular book covering 1980 to 1988. There is at least one other collection of his journals (from, I believe, earlier years, though I'm not certain of that). This collection has made me realize two things: first, one's life needs to be varied and full of adventures in order to make a personal journal riveting; and two, there is as much skill required in keeping a journal as there is to writing any other sort of material. Palin wrote a great deal of the Monty Python material, both for the TV series and for their films.
I am really enjoying reading his day-to-day entries, though of course, the book has had to pick and choose from the complete journals, in order to keep the book's length reasonable. Prior to today, I had only read a few of the beginning pages of Palin because I was reading three other, shorter books that kept me quite happy. I am still reading the book on coffee and philosophy, but having finished rereading the Michener and smiling my way through the Donald Davis, I was ready to get into the Palin book.
