"Sorry again," Ava said, smiling apologetically and holding tight onto Wilbur's leash so he wouldn't knock over the woman's shopping bag again. This one had at least been more understanding than the first guy had been earlier, when Ava had sat down on a bench next to him and Wilbur had tried to hump his leg. Ava had only looked away for two seconds. Barely. If that.
Under the circumstances, Ava supposed she could understand why he hadn't found Wilbur quite as adorable as she did.
Maybe they had weekend dog training classes somewhere -- assuming six months wasn't too old to start training a dog. It hadn't even been a week since Ava had picked him up from the animal rescue, though, so she probably couldn't expect immediate results. Over the weekend she'd picked up half a dozen books on dog training from the library, which as far as she was concerned was the best place to start whenever she was clueless about anything. She'd tried some blogs as well, but had run into too much conflicting information.
She sat down on another bench and laughed as Wilbur sniffed at her boots. All things considered, they were getting along okay. He really was great company for someone who couldn't talk back. He even seemed to like when she turned her music up, and she'd noticed he liked to run circles around her feet whenever she started dancing around her apartment. And he'd only chewed on one of her album covers so far, which wasn't too terrible. He just wasn't nearly as shy as Ava was about approaching people, that was all.
She bent down to get his toy out of her bag, thinking that might keep him occupied, and rummaged through until she felt a sharp tug on the leash again. Clearly he'd met someone else. "Wilbur, wait!"
