Ava stepped gingerly into the kitchen, wary of disturbing the cake. She'd had to duck back into the bedroom to change out of her work clothes, because she'd only gotten in a half hour ago and Rori would be there soon. Now wearing a little blue dress she knew Rori liked, she pulled some wine out of the refrigerator along with the icing she'd made the previous night, humming a little--but not too loudly, because of the cake.
She hoped the wine wouldn't go badly with whatever Rori was drinking with Shosh; mostly she wished she'd been able to go out too. It was times like this she really hated her somewhat irregular work hours.
It wasn't every day she could celebrate her girlfriend's birthday. A lot had changed since going to Rori's cookout a year ago, and she just wanted to make it special.
She was waiting for the cake to cool when the the knock at the door came. She set two glasses and some candles on the counter and padded barefoot over to answer it with Wilbur in tow, wishing she'd had enough time to get everything perfect. The thought didn't make her feel quite as anxious as it'd used to, at least.
When she saw Rori, she opened the door wider and reached for her hand. "Happy Birthday," she said, even though she'd said it on the phone earlier and texted it and all. "Sorry work kept me so late. I wish I'd had more time to ice the cake and everything."
