Date: January 22, 2012 Characters: Ariel Crabtree, Erica Allen Location: Ariel’s place Status: Private Summary: Ariel and Erica hang out and catch up. Completion: Incomplete
“Not all brides are bad,” Erica added, knowing Ariel would be able to relate, “but some of them are just downright awful and catty.” She rather thought that had more to do with their personality than them being a bride, though. “Exactly,” she said with a smile, and really she preferred to go with the flow, anyway. She frowned at Ariel’s response to her encouragement, wondering if she should repeat the things Ezra had told her last year when she’d been so doubtful she would ever have a meaningful relationship. She didn’t, though, because she knew from experience that sometimes you just had to come to realize it on your own.
Erica smiled as Ariel talked about Ezra. He was sweet, and she was glad Ariel saw and appreciated that. “Well, that’s nice. I might have given him a hard time about not having set up another date with you yet,” she admitted with a smile, her nose wrinkling a little. “I know he’s taking things slow, I think it’s just cause he’s worried he’s gonna get in the same situation he was in before, in a serious relationship without really knowing each other first,” she explained. She wasn’t sure she should even be talking about Ezra to Ariel, and she worried briefly that she might be breaking some kind of best friend code, but she didn’t think Ezra would tell Ariel this, and she thought Ariel should know.
"Not all of them, no. But hte bad ones are easier to remember," Ariel admitted, grinning. They at least lingered in her mind more than the good ones did. Though some of the good ones stayed in her mind, too; she had her favorite clients, and a few she wished she could see more.
Ariel laughed. "I don't really mind. If he wants to take things slow, then that's okay." She ran a hand back through her hair. "I mean, I'm not used to it, but there's nothing wrong with it." She was used to men just wanting to take what they wanted, even in a relationship. "Well, yeah, he's barely out of nearly marrying that guy Kyle, right? I guess that sorta makes me a rebound." She lifted a shoulder, knowing he was treating her like a rebound, and not accusing him of doing so.
“They really are,” Erica agreed with a small laugh, though there were a few wonderful brides she didn’t think she’d be forgetting.
Erica was glad that Ariel didn’t seem to mind if Ezra took things slow. She thought it would be good for Ezra to take things slower this time around. “No, there isn’t anything wrong with it, but I think it’s not real common to find a guy who’d rather take things slow,” she commented, figuring that if Ariel wasn’t used to it, she would understand what she meant. “I wouldn’t say barely. They broke up the end of September, so it’s been over three months, and they were only together for like seven months. And you and Ez have been friends for a little bit, right? I don’t think he sees you as a rebound. If he did, I don’t think he’d be taking things so slow,” she said with a small shrug.
"No, it's not common, I think," Ariel agreed. Not in her experience. Most all guys were after only one thing. Her lips twitched slightly. "Not that we exactly started out slow," she said, smiling faintly at that memory, "but he's been pretty much the perfect gentleman since then." It was less than she'd done in the past, of course, and he'd respected her wants in that regard, a first in who knew how long, if ever.
"Yeah, well, they were going to be married," she said with a shrug. It was still a little odd, that he'd been with a guy before her, but she didn't think too much on it. She didn't want to ask any awkward questions. "I don't think he does, no, so that's good, and we are friends." She trusted him, inasmuch as she trusted men on the whole, and he hadn't done anything to hurt her yet.
Erica bit her lip to keep from giggling at that, remembering how Ezra had been all adorably embarrassed about talking about how he and Ariel had started out. “I’m sure he has been. Ez is a really good guy,” she commented, hoping Ariel could see that for herself.
Erica wondered briefly if it bothered Ariel that Ezra had been engaged. She had this instinct to stand up for Ezra or talk him up or something, and she figured that probably came with the best friend territory. “Yeah, they were,” she agreed simply, letting it go. “Good,” she said with a smile, glad that Ariel didn’t really think Ezra looked at her as a rebound. She felt like it was a good time to let the topic of Ezra drop, though, as she didn’t want Ariel to think she was only hanging out with her to talk about Ezra. “So, do you feel like playing?” she asked, changing the subject.
Ariel's lips quirked into almost a smirk, remembering. She should be more embarrassed, she supposed, but she was comfortable with Erica. She seemed like someone who wouldn't criticize her for how she and Ezra had started out. "He is, I know. That's one thing I don't doubt," she said, smiling slightly.
She smiled. "Yeah, sure, that sounds good." She rose and grabbed her guitar from its safe corner. She perched on the arm of the couch, knee propped up slightly to support the guitar. "What do you feel like playing? Anything in particular?"
Erica stomped down hard on the laughter that wanted to bubble up at the expression on Ariel’s face at the reminder of how she and Ezra had started out. Though she didn’t know exactly what had happened during their True Blood marathon, she could imagine, and she could appreciate how such a thing could put that smirk-like smile on one’s face. “Good,” she said simply, glad that Ariel didn’t doubt that about Ezra.
Erica retrieved her guitar, as well, glad that she had someone else she could play with - someone who wouldn’t cringe if she started playing Taylor Swift or some other overly feminine country songs. “Nope, nothing in particular,” she answered, and then she just let her fingers start playing whatever tune came to mind. She could hardly believe that she’d started playing almost a year ago, but she was so glad she’d decided to buy a guitar and learn.
