Elliot put his feet up on the balcony railing, stretching out and tilting his chair back as he lit a cigarette. Supper was in the oven-casserole dish Nellie had taught him-and he had a few minutes before he needed to go check on it or start any of the sides. He was tired, not so much physically as emotionally. Like occasionally happened, he felt a little wrong-footed, and it was no one’s fault but his own.
After taking a long drag of it-first one of the day, which might account for why his shoulders felt tight-he pulled out his phone and hit the speed dial for Carrie, tucking it between his ear and shoulder. He needed to figure out Thanksgiving plans… and he wanted to hear her voice, he admitted to himself. He listened, eyes half-closed, as the phone rang, hoping he hadn’t called too early or interrupted a nap or something.
