"Actually, I kind of wish you'd called earlier." Her sister's voice was warm and excited, in typical Maggie-fashion when she'd latched on to an idea; it was gratifying, because Mia hadn't been quite sure how Maggie would feel about her calling and asking to raid her fabric stash for a charity fund-raiser. Not because she'd thought there'd be a problem, so much as she didn't know what Maggie planned to do with it all anymore. "I mean, I've had Grandmother's sewing machine for ages, and I still haven't used it all that much. Even with that whole...shopping fun last year."
Rolling her eyes slightly as she slid the closet door open and knelt down, head leaning to the side to keep the 'phone securely between her cheek and shoulder, Mia wondered if Maggie knew just how much her voice gave her away sometimes. "You mean the fabric binge you went on when you found out there were such things as year-end sales on fabric?" That had been more "fun" than Mia had bargained for, spending what seemed like forever pushing a cart behind her sister that had filled alarmingly with fabric and innumerable things to sew on for decoration or practicality. But Maggie had gotten into her head that she was going to learn how to make her own clothes, and gone all out the way she always did, only realizing afterwards that if she was going to stay in Auntie's apartment during grad school like they'd planned, she couldn't take half the stuff she was accumulating. And for whatever reason, despite everything else of Maggie's belongings staying in Cali or going to Boston, Mia had ended up with obaasan's sewing machine and Maggie's fabric. As a storage favor, though she couldn't remember granting it.
"It's not that bad, 'neechan." The pout in Maggie's voice made her smile, though she was half-tempted to respond with a "Only because you're not here with it taking up most of a closet, little sister." But it was here, and Maggie was there in Boston, and in the meantime, she wanted to go through some of what was in the boxes in the closet while she had Maggie on the line. Figure out what was safe to offer Ariel - who had offered to help make things for the volunteers to sell at the festival this weekend - in return for her coming in at the last minute and rushing to get stuff done up in time. Wouldn't have been right to ask her to provide time and materials; at least not to Mia's mind, and she'd argued hard to make sure that if more stuff had to be gotten, the other girl would at least be offered some kind of tax-break so she didn't break her bank trying to help them, when they'd be getting the proceeds. Maybe there'd be something in here she could offer as a sort of gift, something Ariel could use for herself or make into something she could sell. Hopefully that would be fair recompense; Mia would be the first to admit she didn't know much about how expensive fabric-craft was, so she'd have to ask once Ariel got here.
She tugged out the first box and lifted the lid. "Oh, I remember this. You went on a skirt-tear for a while, and you were going to make one out of this. You remember the one with
purple flowers? I think it's called batik." Raising an eyebrow at the next bit underneath it as she lifted the purple out and set it on the floor, she reached back in and pulled out one with
peacock feathers. "Maggie, I thought you actually used this. Or got a friend to do it. The peacock feathers? Weren't you going to make a shirt out of it?"
"I don't even remember buying peacock fabric," came the confession, which nevertheless surprised her a little. "I remember the purple flowers, and I do want to do something with those, but she can have half. I bought a lot, right?"
Mia unfolded the purple fabric, and pursed her lips in thought. "There's several yards at least. I think it was one you got on a ridiculous sale or something. So let Ariel use enough for a bag or two, and save you the rest?"
"Yeah, that sounds good." Mia heard an audible swallow, then remembered Maggie'd mentioned making dinner while they talked. Which meant she really needed to get some kind of idea together of what she was going to offer Ariel in the way of food, if they didn't order take-out. Especially since the other girl had offered to come over after work. "And I found some more peacock stuff up here, so she can have all of that. I don't think there was a lot of it. Is there any of the
cherries left?"
Digging to the bottom of that box, then bringing out a second and going through that until she "ah-ha"-ed triumphantly, she straightened back up with a small smile. "Found it. Um..." She quickly unfolded it, then shook her head. "You'd be lucky to get anything out of it, to be honest."
"That's a shame. Well, okay, then go ahead and see if she can do anything with it. Mi-chan, how's this. There're what, five containers of stuff with you right now? What if we do this..."
