It was after Max's last class that he thought about stopping by Oddball 42. He'd been hearing the buzz from Jay and the other folks there for a while, but he wanted to see for himself how people were taking it. Character death in a comic was treated like Serious Business, and even if he wasn't as caught up in it, he wanted to see it.

"Man, you look like someone died in here." He said to Jay, joking, waiting for the dirty look.

Oh the dirty look that Jay gave his best friend. There were new levels of dirty look that were invented at this precise moment. "Someone did die, you ass."

There had been a steady stream of people flowing in and out of the reading room, red-eyed and sniffling after reading the issue. And it was a beautiful issue, the art was magnificent, the plots were well-executed, he had gotten a kind of Prince Xixor vibe to Namor in some of the Namor and Susan scenes (and he'd have loved to ask that question to Hickman)...but despite the good sendoff to Johnny, it was still a sendoff. And that last panel had made him cry.

"Business has been amazing today, though." He commented. "Seen people I haven't seen in years come in."

Max rolled his eyes. "Sorry. Forgot how it was." And he'd continue teasing if he hadn't noticed the red eyes in the room. Even he wasn't that much of an ass.

"So, who won the betting pool?" He asked, leaning against the counter.

"Wow, that big?" He was reluctantly impressed. "When was the last time someone got offed like this?" Jay knew far better than he did, for all of Max's interest in the subject matter.

"Captain America in Civil War." Jay replied, "The death that shocked the entire comics nation." And it had been that big of a deal. The Civil War arc was tough to read but losing Cap the way that they had was just...Jay still had no words for it and it was years after the fact. The Confession with Tony and then the last panel in that book was so gutwrenching...that it still defied description.

"And I believe that out of the people who put money in, Tegan actually won the pool." Jay said, in a quieter voice.

Max nodded. He'd never been that moved by any fictional character death, but he got that a person could get attached to someone like that.

"Oh?" Max leaned in. "Please tell me it wasn't Sue." Fictional character or no, hurting women bothered him a lot

"Not Sue," Jay told him, "and not the kids either, though Franklin did get his powers back."

He motioned for Max to come around to the other side of the counter. It'd be easier to whisper it to him this way. There was a momentary lull in the customers streaming in.

Max scooted around to sit closer, his eyes widening as Jay whispered to him. "Huh." He sat back, thought for a minute. "Well, at least it was a good way to go, all heroic and stuff."

He watched looked over at the reading room. "How many boxes of tissues did you have to get?"

"Yeah. It was a good death, I mean as good as deaths can go. Be missed though." Jay noted, keeping it neutral still in case anyone could hear him.

"Dude, you do not even want to know. I learned from Cap and all. They were raiding the bathrooms for the TP and paper towels then. There's a huge sign in there with all the full boxes and a couple hundred trashcans to dispose of tissues and empty boxes." Jay said, rubbing his face slightly. It had been a long day and the adrenaline was starting to wear off. " I have beer upstairs. I think tonight is either a pizza or Chinese night. Want to join me?"

"They usually are. Otherwise they don't kill them off. It's like Firefly. Whedon picked the one everyone would be upset over in BDM." Max said, settling into the seat.

"Didn't realize Fantastic Four had quite so many fans. I mean, in the relative spectrum of comic book fans. But then, what do I know, I still read X-men." Max laughed.

"Hey, Yeah, sure. Dropped Ruth off at home, so the evening is free. This week, anyway. Next week I'll be working the job." He said, feeling very smug.

"It's got a good following. It helps that after Civil War, more people started reading more in the larger Marvel universe. Stuff outside what they had already gotten into." Jay had actually liked the Civil War arc, despite still having some emotional trauma about Cap's death. But then most Marvel fans he knew and especially the Avengers fans still had some emotional trauma about it. Like the Star Wars fans and the New Jedi Order with Anakin and Chewie. Or like Max had stated, Wash, and the sudden completely unexpected killing of.

"Pizza or Chinese, dude? You decide, my brain is too tired."
