She should have known something was up when Jeff had shown up with breakfast, she thought as she stared at her brother in shock, setting her paper plate down and replaying his question over in her head. Do you have feelings for Aleksy?

“He’s Derrick’s best friend,” she said, giving her brother a funny look and picking her bagel back up. She finished it in three quick bites, thinking that that was explanation enough for her.

Jeff rolled his eyes, finishing his own breakfast. “Yeah, Sha-Sha, but you were the one that organized the birthday thing for him. You were the one that got his brother out here. And you are the one that’s been hooking up with him. Don’t bother denying it, Der’ told me all about it.”

‘Chele gave him another look, this one confused. “Yeah, that’s not a secret. We’ve slept together a few times, so what? That’s the part of the benefits when it comes to friends with benefits,” she told him. “And yeah, we’re friends, too. Der’s got everything goin’ on with Fi, and …” She paused, shrugging. “It’s no big deal.”

“‘Chele,” Jeff said flatly. “You’re not that good of a liar.”

‘Chele blinked, opening her mouth to retort before shutting it with an audible click. She was, though. Her brother didn’t know about her writing, about her fear of Israel, about the last time she’d called ‘Sky to come get her out of jail. “I’m... Seriously, Jeff, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Did she? ‘Sky was just a friend, sure, she’d rather hook up with him then any of her others, but... She did have others.

She meandered into the kitchen, balling up her paper towel and plate and throwing them away, aware of Jeff’s eyes on her. After a moment, she boosted herself up on the counter, her thinking spot. “You can’t run from the truth,” he told her from the doorway to the kitchen, leaning against the doorjamb. “Y’got feelings from him, little sis.”

She rolled her eyes slightly, pulling one leg up on the counter and resting her chin on her knee. “Sure, he’s my friend,” she said again. “So of course there’d be feelings.”

Jeff sighed, crossing the kitchen to throw his own garbage away. “Y’can hide from me, but Auntie Mel saw you last week. Saw how you looked at him, how much you wanted him to like your surprise. And really, ‘Chele? Bringing his brother out for his birthday?” He gave her a fond look, shaking his head. “I’m surprised Derrick didn’t catch on.”

‘Chele groaned. “Do not go giving him the idea, Jeffrey. ‘Sky and I have had enough trouble convincing him that we’re not dating.” She paused slightly. “Aleksy doesn’t date, by the way. So even if I did - and I am not saying I do - have feelings for him... Well, it wouldn’t matter.”

Jeff leaned against the counter next to her, knocking his hip into her leg. “I have to say, ‘Chele, he’s far better than the last bad boy that you fell for.”

Groaning again, ‘Chele rolled her eyes. “Yeah, yeah, none of you liked Juan. And I never said I’ve fallen for ‘Sky!” She winced as her voice rose. She hadn’t, had she? Why was she so defensive of it then? In the past, she’d laughed it off. She glared at Jeff. “You... are as bad as Derrick.”

“Hey! I resent that remark!” He glared back before his expression softened. “Sha-sha. I just wanna see you happy. So do Ma and Pa and Der and Auntie Mel and Uncle Jesse.”

‘Chele slid off the counter, sighing heavily. “Maybe you should worry about yourself and your love life first, before you start poking at mine. How’s the last chick... Mandie was it? Heard she’d married and pregnant now.”

“Ouch, ‘Chele. Seriously, ouch.” He looped an arm around her neck, tugging on her hair fondly. “But okay, point made. I’ll let it be for now.”

“Good.” She ducked out of his hold in a well-practiced move, twisting his arm behind his back. “And watch the hair, Jeffrey.” She let him go after she had made her point and moved to settle back on the couch, tucking her legs up underneath her.

Jeff watched his sister for a long moment. “I’m gonna take off, Sha. Ma wants some heavy lifting done and I told Pa I’d do it.” He leaned down, kissing her brow quickly. “Don’t think too hard, okay?”

She gave him an exasperated look. “Thanks for breakfast. Now get, Mister Knows-Me-Too-Well.”

Jeff gave her one more long glance before letting himself out as she rolled her eyes behind him. Chewing on her thumb nail, ‘Chele reached for a notepad. Did Jeff have a point? Did she have feelings for Aleksy? She started jotting down thoughts absently, before realizing what she had written.

Doesn’t want a relationship (with me?)

That right there. That was the problem, ‘Chele thought as she tossed the pad away and headed for her room. Even if she did, he wouldn’t want her that way. And she’d never push him too, she valued their friendship too much.

Rolling her shoulders back, ‘Chele made an impulsive decision. She’d go out tonight, get Aleksy out of her mind, and all the thoughts Jeff had brought. She’d say her goodbyes sometime before she left, and she really needed to pin down what day she was leaving for Israel, she thought as she investigated her closet.
