Dess was gone, officially and Maureen was in charge and she was not at all prepared for this life of balancing school, and work, and managing, and Layla, and trying to figure out what was going with Charisma. And then Jay had called, asking for a second date and she couldn't resist saying yes. She still didn't think she was ready for serious, but she enjoyed Jay's company.
Layla was at a friend's house for the night, and Maureen was thrilled that her daughter was finally making friends at school. She had been a little worried about how much time Layla preferred to spend at the diner with her after school, but thing seemed to be working out. She finished dressing, smoothing her hands down her dress and laughing as she heard Jay pull up outside. Perfect timing once again. She grabbed her purse, checking her lipstick in the mirror before dashing a note out to Charisma in case her sister came home.
She locked the door behind her, meeting Jay's eyes and flushing. Tonight would be a good night, she was sure.
