Jake was up early. He hadn’t slept particularly well the previous night-phantom pains in his back and legs again, and he really fucking hated the pills so he’d only taken half of one, which didn’t do a lot for a man his size. It had taken the edge off, but all that allowed him to do was think in the darkness of his room, alone.
He’d been doing a lot of that thinking lately, on different things, and people. There was a lot to take in, a lot to process. He was seeing one of his good friends in an entirely different light. While he’d known Neve was an attractive woman, she’d always been in the firmly unavailable slot. Now, like magic, she wasn’t. And even more magically, she seemed to want him-him, the chair and all.
It was just… mind boggling. Jake hadn’t had the best track record for actual relationships. Casual flings that lasted for a few months or weeks were one thing, those had always ended well, with the exception of Karen, who had ended badly when things had gotten serious. And there was no questioning that anything with Neve would be serious. It was scary to think that he could also break their friendship if he screwed things up with her, and he valued her friendship highly.
And there was a huge chance he’d screw things up, with his past and his present.
He finally got up and slowly went through his long bathroom routine and wheeled out to the kitchen, clad in sweatpants and nothing else at the early hour-because it was still very early. He sighed and started the coffee, thinking he might as well start his day. Drew should be getting back from his run soon, he’d probably appreciate the coffee.
