Jasper hadn't known what to expect at this hearing, and he honestly wasn't entirely sure why they'd needed a hearing in the first place, except that Leanne had said she wanted things completely official and legal, and that this was the way she wanted to do it. He could respect that, even though he was still thoroughly confused as to why she was so adamant about him being the one to raise Abby.
The judge had even seemed confused when Leanne had said she wasn't going to fight Jasper's filing for custody. Jasper had waited patiently as the judge had gone through the facts of the case, answering any questions directed toward him honestly and calmly, and wishing that Demi was standing next to him rather than sitting in the chairs off to the side. It meant the world to him that she was here, that even after having time to really think things through, she was still supporting and loving him.
Jasper's world seemed to turn upside down, though, when the judge said that he didn't see any reason not to approve the change of legal custody, but then asked Leanne directly why she was in favor of it. He'd often wondered, but he never thought, never anticipated what her answer would be. Huntington's Disease. Fuck! His hands had gripped the table in front of him so hard that his knuckles had turned white. Why hadn't she told him? God, how was Abby going to deal with this?
He nodded mutely when the judge issued his final ruling, giving him legal custody of Abby, surprised when he felt Demi's hand slip into his. He followed her lead, shocked and completely lost in his thoughts. His eyes squinted against the glare of the sun when they went outside, and he walked with Demi to the parking lot, glad that Demi wasn't trying to get him to talk about everything yet. He couldn't sort out his thoughts, and he just didn't know what to say. He spotted Leanne hurrying to her car, and he abruptly changed directions to intercept her.
"Damn it, Leanne! Why didn't you tell me?!" he asked fiercely. It was the one clear thought in his head.
Leanne sighed and hung her head. "God, I'm sorry Jasper. I just... I wanted to tell you before, but I couldn't." And God, she looked so ashamed and embarrassed that any heat Jasper felt toward her about it blew out of him.
