Sam was exhausted, but Alli had said she was dropping by that evening, and she was determined not to be asleep when her friend got there. The week had been a busy and tiring one. It seemed like the better she got, the harder she had to work. Suddenly it was no longer enough to lie around in the bed all day, and while she was really glad of it on one hand, she could definitely feel the difference. The people who always called physical therapy "pain and torture" weren't lying.
But sitting up without passing out was going to be handy, so again, no complaints. It was better already, which made her feel more normal. More alive.
Rather than sleep, she was trying to read. That did not feel normal. It was harder than she remembered, and she kept losing her place. It was another of those things that they said was typical of the problems she was having with her vision, but it was irritating. She kept at it anyway, determined to at least finish a chapter of the book her mother had brought her--the latest Blaise Marshall, which had come out while she'd been unconscious. She suspected it would be good if she could get through.
Maybe she'd make Jake read some aloud next time she saw him. That made her laugh aloud.
