Mona had lost track of the exact number of days she'd been sober, but she rather thought the fact that she was still sober was what really mattered. Things were still tense with her father, but she supposed that was to be expected. He was frustrated that her mother had put so much money and effort into Mona's rehabillitation. Mona just didn't want to disappoint them. Not again. She was so tired of disappointing people.
But even with the dental work (at least her teeth were nearly white and the rotting taken care of, even if she didn't have all of them) and the nice clothes her mother had paid for, she felt like all people still saw was trash. She hadn't had an interview yet, and it's not like she could blame them. She had no marketable skills.
She was definitely beginning to lose hope, but she wasn't going to give up. Not yet. She was borrowing her mother's car again, getting applications at restaurants near the hospital. Waitressing seemed like her only hope. She parked outside a diner - Sunshine Diner, and wouldn't that be ironic if she ended up with a job there? Not likely, she thought, but she could definitely use a break.
Mona walked into the diner, trying to remember to smile, to exude confidence she didn't feel. She walked up to the counter where a pretty brunette stood. "Hi," Mona said. "I was wondering if I could get an application?"
