Ever since Friday, Brendon hadn't been able to stop thinking about what he had told Rico about his past or the sheer fact that he had told Rico or all the memories that, talking about it, had brought to the surface. Unlike times before, when unwanted memories would pop up, distracting himself with work or the gym, he started to think about the memories a little differently. Something about what Rico had said - "maybe if you let go of everything you hated about it and instead focus on the things you didn't hate --" - had stayed with him. Surprisingly enough, he started to realize that while the childhood memories were hard to look back on and know, in the end, it was his fault that it had cost him his closest childhood friend - those weren't the hardest memories he had to work through
( ... )
"Evening." Rico noticed that Brendon was dressed semi-formally, which was good for a gallery show thing. He hadn't been sure what to expect, since he hadn't bothered warning against the skull shirts this time. He was still wearing his suit that he'd worn to work, though he had rolled up the sleeves of his shrit and taken off the coat.
"I'm always ready for culture," he said dryly, waiting for the door to close before he started driving towards the gallery. "You do know that the sun's not that high in the sky right, don't you? Or do you wear your sunglasses at night, too?"
Brendon gave Rico a look over and had to admit silently to himself that the man looked good. He did have eyes after all and could appreciate a man's (or woman's) looks for what they were.
"Doesn't everyone where their sunglasses at night?" he asked, twitching his lips up in amusement. However, realizing just how low the sun was in the sky, he pocketed the sunglasses before giving Rico his attention. "I know it's true friendship when you continue to notice my fashion statements or lack thereof and mock me for them."
"Perhaps it's some sort of chic thing that I'm clueless about." Rico snorted. "This will definitely be a true friendship, then, as I fully intend to mock you whenever the opportunity arises. Besides, that wasn't about fashion. It was due to my preference to look into the eyes of anyone I hold a conversation instead of seeing shiny images of myself reflected back at me."
Rico tapped his fingers against the steering wheel. "Glad you could get away from work tonight. Lucia says this photography thing is good. Hope it at least makes sense and isn't weirdly abstract. Hate looking at a bunch of shit that I'm supposed to see all these things in but just look like blobs to me."
"Give yourself that option now." Rico shrugged. "You aren't getting any younger, you know? One day, you'll find yourself old and unable to do or enjoy many of the things you might have wanted to but always put off. Have you ever gone bungee jumping? Or jumped out of an airplane? Those are fun activities, too."
Rico snorted. "Lucia understood that something came up. I expect she'll be preparing a questionnaire and perhaps a simpler version of the inquisition if our friendship continues to develop. She was too young to be curious or care when Jake and I became friends," he said. "Now, she stares and makes odd comments in teen-girl, which is a language I can't speak."
"I think everyone wishes for super powers at some point in their childhood. Of course, I can understand why you would want them, in particular." Rico shook his head. "I've never heard of them. C'mon. Let's go look at these photographs. Maybe we can get a drink after."
"Those are on my list of things to attempt one day," Brendon said with a grin. While he never gave himself the option before, he had thought of what he'd like to do if given the chance. "Along with attempting to horse back ride, becoming a better shot and writing an epic novel."
Brendon chuckled. "Oh good - I would prefer a simpler version of the inquisition, personally." He got out of the car and shut the door behind him. "A drink would be good. Have you had dinner yet?"
"Good. You'll enjoy them. I like horseback riding, though I only seem to do that when I'm on vacation." Rico shook his head. "I am already a good shot, so I could help you with that if you want advice from someone as loco as I am. However, I have no interest in writing, so I'll leave that one to you."
"No, I didn't have a chance to eat." Rico got out of Sally and made sure the doors were locked before he started walking to the gallery. "There is an excellent Mexican restuarant down the street. Authentic, not this Tex Mex thing you gringos love."
Brendon chuckled and shot him a grin. "Then it's settled - you'll just have to come horseback riding with me sometime and give me a few pointers on shooting. Lucia will then be pleased you're socializing more and I'll get a self proclaimed 'loco's, advise on how to shoot. This way, it will be a little more interesting than if I was going by myself like I've done in the past. As for the writing, I'm more than happy to do that myself, thank you."
"Then it's settled." Brendon asked, walking toward the gallery with Rico. "After we become a little more cultured, we can get excellent Mexican food and have a drink at the same time." He wasn't afraid of trying new places out. Brendon looked around as they walked. The last time he was in this area had only been a month ago and yet it seemed like a life time ago.
