Jase hadn’t been snooping, he really hadn’t. But she’d just left it on her dresser in plain sight. Dr. Erick Gardner, MD. said the tiny font, with the word Pediatrician. And he knew it wasn’t Alden’s pediatrician because Ad' would have mentioned it already, made sure he had the number. So there he sat at the kitchen table, waiting for her to come back from walking Alden, staring a hole into the little white card.
He heard the front door open and waited, knowing they would come find him. And sure enough, the tiny patter of feet followed by, “Unka Jase!” came and he scooped Alden up, bouncing him on his knee for a moment before looking at Adrienne.
Adrienne looked exhausted, for some reason. He made a note to get up with Alden the next morning, let her sleep in a bit. Maybe they could just have an easy day, after they talked, of course. Pop in some movies, make popcorn... It was sounding better and better to him by the minute. But first... He nudged the card towards her and frowned when she blanched and then blushed. “Addie?” Okay, who was this imposter that had replaced his cousin?
Adrienne shook her head at him as she sat down with a heavy sigh. “What were you doing in my room, Jase?”
“Went to put a load of laundry on your bed. Saw it sitting there.” He raised an eyebrow. “I know it’s not for this guy,” he said, bouncing Alden on his knee and smiling as Alden turned around, looping his arms around Jase’s neck and resting his head on Jase’s shoulder. “Aw, somebody’s tired.” He cuddled Alden for a moment before looking at Ad. “You’d tell me immediately if you’d found a new doctor for him so I’d have the contact information.”
Adrienne sighed again. “Jase, really. It’s no big deal. I just met him at Hawthorne the other night - St. Patrick’s Day. We shared a table before Colin texted me that Ald’ was crying.”
Jase tilted his head. “And he gave you his card?”
Rolling her eyes, Adrienne stood to get Alden his juice. “Yeah.”
“Ad.” He sighed. “Y’know I want you out there meeting people, hell, I practically had to shove you out the door without us the other night. But another doctor?”
Adrienne shook her head, finding a sippy cup and pouring the juice into it. “Stop it, Jase. He was nice.”
“So was the dou- Dumbo.” He quickly changed the word, glancing down at the top of Alden’s head. “I just-”
She cut him off. “Stop, just stop. I’m not even going to call him, so there’s nothing for you to worry about.”
“Oh.” Well, great now he felt bad. “Why?”
“Couple reasons. First and foremost being like you said. He’s a doctor. I did that with Greg, I’m not going there again. Second, he was nice yes, but I think a little older than me, maybe verging on the realm of too old, Jase. And third, I really don’t think I’m ready for all that again. Dating again, I mean.” She shrugged, handing Alden his juice and smiling when he gave a small, “Tankoo, Mama.”
Jase frowned. “Ad’... It’s been months since the divorce was finalized, a year since you separated. You’ve gotta get back on the horse sometime. Why do you think I keep trying to get you out there?” And shoving you at Colin, he added silently.
She laughed, sticking out her tongue. “I’ll go when I’m ready, cuz. Not a second before. And speaking about going out... How was your date?” She waggled her eyebrows at him, giggling when he blushed. “That good, hm? Don’t think I’ve ever seen you blush over a date, even in high school.”
He shrugged, shifting Alden a little. “I like her. She’s gorgeous and kind, and makes me laugh. And, God, Ad’. Her eyes. She looks at me and my knees go weak. And I’m turning thirty; maybe it’s time to start thinking about settling down.” He made a face. “Fu-” he glanced down at Alden again. “Fudge. Ad’, what am I turning into?”
“Sounds like you’re twitter-pated, bucko. ‘Bout time if you ask me.”
Scrubbing a hand over his face, he groaned. “I don’t even want to consider that.” He looked up at her, pleading her to go with his subject change. “I was thinking movie day, popcorn, order in? Agreed?”
She ruffled his hair, lifting Alden out of his arms when he reached for her and dropping an affectionate kiss on Jase’s forehead. “I’ll let it go for now. And yeah, that sounds perfect.”
