Chely's schedule this week was seriously messed up. She'd worked a 7 to 7 night shift on Monday and Tuesday, then had all day Wednesday off, and now was working 7 to 7 day shift today through Saturday. It was always easier to work the same shift for a full week (whenever that week began and ended) but Peggy was out with a bad back, and Bruce had come down with the flu, so their supervisor, Fran, had to rejigger the schedule to make sure the E.R. was covered.

When things slowed down in the E.R. in the early afternoon, Fran told Chely to take a break. Chely wasted no time getting to the cafeteria. She'd barely had time to pee this morning, so she wasn't going to miss a lunch break. Going through the cafeteria line, she grabbed a caesar salad, lemonade and garlic bread. As she scanned the room for a place to sit, she recognized one of the blood-suckers, the techs who draw blood for lab work.

"Hey," she said, wandering toward the table. "Mind if I join you?"

"Oh, hi!" Adison smiled politely. "Yeah, sure. I'm Adison, and you'll forgive me if I've already told you that once; I have a hard time with names, and working in a new place there are a lot of new names to remember."

"Hi, Adison, I'm Chely," she said, taking a seat. "I know we've met before, in the E.R. I rememember that you drew the labs last week for the boy with the stomach pains. So how long have you been at JPS?"

"I've only been here about..." Adison paused, counting backwards in her head. "I have to think about it... I moved toward the end of November, so about six weeks. Not very long," she admitted.

"A newbie, and yet we haven't managed to drive you away yet. You must be a glutton for punishment," Chely teased.

Addison was cute, in a girlish sort of way, which made Chely wonder... but this wasn't the time or place to ask such a personal question. Maybe some other time.

"So how is working in the lab going for you? Had any really crazy cases yet?" In a hospital as big as JPS, you could count on having at least one crazy case per week.

Adison chuckled. "Yeah, maybe I am. But I won't be the newbie forever, and meantime it means I'm getting good experience.

"Oh man, talk about the crazy cases." Adison shook her head, still incredulous at the strange events. "Day before yesterday I got sent to re-draw eight INRs that had come up critical, all on the same floor." She sighed. "As a phleb I just graw the blood; most of the time I don't even see the results. I still don't know what was going on down there."

Chely nodding, chewing on a forkful of caesar salad as Adison spoke. "I have to say that to all the newbies," she said with a grin. "Don't want you to think things will ever get much easier here."

"Eight INRs?" This had to be from the ICU.; Chely wondered who the patients were. "Was one of those Mrs. Swenson? The EMTs from Haltom City brought her in, said she'd had a stroke at home. Nice old lady. I was wondering how she was doing."

"No, actually, I don't remember that name. I could be wrong, I'm bad with names. It was in Ortho, if that helps any." Adison shrugged. "I just don't understand how every INR from that floor could have come up critical and not be the lab's mistake. But it wasn't; the results were the same the second time, and we'd QC'd the equipment."

"Hmmm, Ortho," Chely said, feeling somewhere between intrigued and worried. "And it wasn't the lab's mistake? That does sound really odd." Something was going on, but Chely couldn't put a finger on what it might be. "Well, maybe you'll figure it out soon."

She munched on her garlic bread and took a sip of lemonade. "So, Adison, do you work a regular shift or do you rotate all over the place, like I do? My schedule is loco for the next month or so. Something like three nights on, then a couple days off, then three or four days on, then a few days off, then another handful of night shifts - and that goes on through the end of February." She finished her salad in a few more bites. "Wish I could have something more stable but we're pretty short-staffed right now."

"I might not find out. Maybe if I'm down in Ortho again soon, the nurse that was there would tell me--but technically he's not supposed to. HIPAA and all, only know what you need to know to do the job." That was one drawback to being a phleb rather than a nurse: Adison was exposed to little pieces of patients' stories, but she rarely learned how the stories ended.

"Yeah, my schedule's pretty weird too. All the crap shifts no one wants, weekends and swings. New kid," she said, shrugging. "And I don't mind; I don't have a lot to do in my off time anyway."
