Sunday had been desperately renamed Laundry-day. Emergency laundry day, considering she might be wheeling out to Amarillo tomorrow to pick up some horses, if any were well enough to travel. Ainsley had promised to give her more details as she got them.

She was in the middle of the tedium of folding a load when her cell phone went off. She answered it after a quick glimpse at the name on the ID--Ava. Oh, just the person to take her thoughts away from the dark things.

"Hey there! What's up, Ava?"

Ava grinned when she heard Rori's chipper voice. "Hey."

She closed the fridge and held the phone tighter to her ear as she finished putting stuff away. "Oh. Nothing's up, really. I was just thinking about you--I mean, you know, since we haven't talked in a bit, I thought I'd call. How's things? Are you as busy at work as I've been?"

"Busy? God, yes. It's been a bit crazy," Rori said, deciding that flopping down amid the warm towels would be better than finishing the folding just now. "Things are going mostly good. Just been busy getting things organized at the ranch. And well, the other day..." she sighed. "Did you hear about those wildfires near Amarillo?"

Something in Rori's tone made Ava concerned. "The wildfires?" She remembered seeing something about them on one of her news feeds. "Yeah, it's terrible; they said thousands of acres of land have been burned so far, including homes and livestock, but that's-- I thought that was a ways away. Are they spreading?" Ava leaned against the counter and frowned. It wasn't that far. What if Rori had family in West Texas, or... "Has something happened? Are you okay?"
