Friday night and the lights are low . . .

. . . Looking out for the place to go

For three of my friends and me, that place was Mamma Mia!

It was so much fun! I laughed and I laughed and, predictably, was clamoring for karaoke afterwards. We actually did try! But the place we went to hadn't set up their karaoke machine for the night yet, and then it was an open karaoke bar so we all kind of looked at each other and went, "Mmm, maybe not," and headed for Ben & Jerry's ice cream instead. If there'd been a place with a private room for karaoke, we so would have been there. Ah well. We had fun singing (and dancing) while traisping around DC as it was. :)

Anyhow, the movie: Gosh. There was so much to love I'm not quite sure where to begin, so I think I'll just throw them out in whatever order they occur to me.
  • Meryl Streep was great. From the singing to the dancing; I was especially amazed by her agility! (That goes for her two friends too.)
  • Colin Firth really got into his character, and it was great to see. I'm actually glad I knew he was gay beforehand, as it allowed me to pick up on clues like the girly drinks, the sly looks at the other guy, and his mention that he only had dogs. You don't get that stuff in the musical. And when he came out strutting during the end credits? OMG. He was great. Another "Amy falling out of her chair" moment was the first time we saw him in his 20-years-ago look. *dies* (Also, Colin Firth continues to dazzle in a suit.)
  • Pierce Brosnan is a terrible, terrible, terrible singer. But it was like awesomely bad. You had to laugh. (Also, Pierce Brosnan looks good in jeans.)
  • You also had to laugh at Meryl's "Celine Dion" moments (as I like to think of them). The fade away to the Las Vegas casino . . . the sun bathing on a rich man's boat . . . the long white gown flowing in the wind . . . those were all "Amy falling out of her chair" moments too.
  • Love the boy's dance sequence right before their guys' night out, when they're in their snorkel gear. I loved it in the musical too. Their dance moves and the waddling in flipper gear never fails to make me laugh.
  • Bill Anderson's (Stellan Skarsgård) "Sunny side up" was o.O!!!! I was not expecting that at all. Totally fell out of my chair for that one too, though more so out of shock. Once I got over the shock, the laughter resumed.
  • Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) was great! I adored her. (And I loved her wedding dress and hair!)
  • Heartwarming moments were Meryl and her daughter snuggled up in a chair together as she painted her daughters' toenails, and Sophie's afternoon spent with her dads. I got a little teary-eyed during both those scenes.
  • Scenery was gorgeous!
  • I thought the cast had great chemistry as a whole. You can feel their energy and know that they had a lot of fun filming it together. It makes me a little sad to think that they aren't a real family, because they deserve to be. They were a great cast.

Hmmm . . . what else. I think that's all I can come up with for now, but yeah. GO! Take your girlfriends with you; it's a guaranteed girls' night out of fun. (So long as you like ABBA.) It's cute, cheesy, and 100% silly, but so long as you take it in the spirit it's intended, you will have an awesome time. My belly needs to go rest now; it got a great work-out of laughter tonight. ;)
