First, there was
The Emma Question in which someone wondered whether Knightley might have been better off with Jane Fairfax. *blink* Is she for real? The man loans his carriage in a neighborly gesture and suddenly it's true love forever? I don't think so. In the words of Lady C, from their cradles, Knightley and Emma were meant for one another! Well, okay, her cradle and his bed. ;P
Any deviation from that, well, it's blasphemous. Mess with canon by playing Twister with other couples if you must. But for the love of all that's Jane Austen, don't mess with Emma and Knightley! Some things are sacred.
Unfortunately, it only got
worse, and we moved out of the JA world. Okay, I’ll grant her the Little Women point. Personally, I’ve always been a member of the Jo and Laurie school of thought. But I fully recognize that this is a hotly debatable point.
However. I cannot grant her the Anne of Green Gables point. It took effort for her to accept Gilbert? When has Anne and Gilbert as a couple ever been a debatable issue? Never in my life have I ever encountered a person who thought that Anne should be with any person other than Gilbert. Hello! Who else should Anne have married? Roy? He who didn’t have any sort of imagination and couldn’t laugh? Charlie? Who, as Mrs. Lynde so aptly points out, is a Sloane and therefore needs no other description. Some other random man? I’m sorry. I’m just not seeing why she things Gilbert and Anne aren’t suited for each other.
My jaw has dropped. And not in a good way.
