I have recently come to the opinion of... main stream "anti-comedy" is not for me. I just watched Little Miss Sunshine and for most of it I couldn't help but think, "Why am I watching this?"
There were less than ten times I laughed. These are they.
- The pure schadenfreude of Dwayne discovering he is color-blind, and thus cannot be a pilot.
- Steve Carrel's running.
-
This woman. Who is, I swear, the same role over and over again but that's why we love her. (I have also seen her in Donnie Darko and Wonderfalls.)
- The guy Frank was in love with seeing the "Jugs" magazine.
-"You forgot your slushie."
- Abigail Breslin's outfits.
Things I found remotely sweet:
- Asking Miss California if she eats ice-cream
- Sheryl (Mom) saying that they'd love Olive even if she wanted to be fat. And okay, I just really like Toni Collete anyway. No rhyme or reason to it, I just love her. I think she's gorgeous in this understated permanently sleep-deprived manner (that and I kind of fell in love with her performance in Velvet Goldmine. She was doomed from the beginning, poor thing.).
- Grandpa giving the pep-talk prior to croaking.
- "Give her a hug"
- Olive hugging Dwayne post pure schadenfreude.
- The discussion about Proust.
- Abigail Breslin's outfits.
Over all... I had the Napoleon Dynamite reaction. Just not my thing, kind of quirky... but over all lacking in anything substantial. Probably my least favorite movie of the year. (Shut up, I know it's only the third movie I've watched this year - and yes - I understand that pretty much everything pales when watched back to back with Hedwig and the Angry Inch.)
So there you have it folks. My review of an overall, lack luster movie.
To quote Michael Kors - "I'm underwhelmed."
But on the plus side... you all have twelve days before I once more grace New York with my presence.
