This...this was not her impressive escape. The one she hadn't finished planning. This was actually probably going from bad to worse, except at least she wasn't chained to a wall. That was a plus, right?
"Yes. A guest. Did you think we were slavers?" Maxi replied, watching her reactions carefully. "We're way classier than that. We're more into treasure and gold than living, breathing human beings. So in a way, you really lucked out, huh?"
He kneeled down next to her to loosen up the bonds she'd been left in. "Sorry about the idiots outside. They don't know what to do with pretty girls."
Rule number one of escaping a situation where one was not chained to a wall yet? Don't provoke the one undoing the ropes. Even if you've had a really crappy week.
"You look a bit more like pirates. Never figured pirates to be the altruistic slave-freeing sorts." She frowned thoughtfully...mostly in an attempt not to wince at the way her wrists didn't appreciate the manhandling. With all the ropes and shackles she'd dealt with since capture, she'd have bruises for a month. "Yeah? Well that seems t'be a running theme of the area."
"Well, maybe most pirates aren't. But this is my crew and they do what I say, and I don't like slavers," Maxi pointed out. He discarded the ropes on the floor, then stood up.
"Name's Maxi. I'm the captain of this humble little vessel. And you are?"
Pointing out the ridiculousness of pirates with standards wouldn't have been in her best interests. Until she actually had some sort of leverage it was really best she not.
She pursed her lips, still peevish about the week as a whole. "Rose...Tyler. And where is this vessel?"
"Where? Well, our course is cutting northeast through the South Seas at the moment, so anywhere between the port we left and Shanghai," Maxi offered. "The middle of nowhere. You're really pretty lucky we stumbled on you when we did. Another few days and you would have been sold off like livestock."
He folded his arms and gave the young woman a once-over. "I guess we could be good enough to give you a ride wherever you want to go, though... given your patience with a bunch of ill-mannered sea dogs like us."
Shanghai? How did she manage to get on the other side of the world? Just how much of her time with the slavers did she spend unconscious and in transport? She grimaced and suppressed a shudder at the probable answer considering the distance they'd covered by boat.
"A pirate ship?" She arched an eyebrow. "Isn't there...only certain places y'could dock?"
"We've got fake papers and a fake ship name and a few other fake things. We can dock anywhere we want," Maxi explained, gesturing for her to stand up. "And it's really the least we could do. Not like we can really leave you where we found you, right?"
He gestured at the cabin around them. "So, since you're my guest, you can make yourself at home. I might not venture out of here if I were you, though, because my crew hasn't seen a woman in months and they're all dumber than bricks. I trust them all with my life... with a pretty woman? Maybe not so much. I'll give 'em a little talk later on and we'll see how they behave."
"...Ah. Right. Keeping up with the times?" She stood after a moment, brushing off her knees, and took in the cabin with a wary, thoughtful look. Normally she'd say she could take the ruffians outside, but when she's exhausted, starving, and without any of her equipment? She really didn't want to have to try if she didn't have to.
"Unless you're willing to punch a bunch of sailors off of you... just about," he shrugged. "Though help yourself to anything in here. This is my quarters. Those morons outside won't dare barge in here without my OK."
"...Yeah well...gimme a day and ask again." And maybe a four course meal or two.
The obvious question she wanted to ask was how she knew he wouldn't give that okay, or why she ought to trust him on his own...but it was a moot point. She'd have to be careful regardless. "...Right." She frowned around the cabin again. It was better than chained to a wall, but not by all that much, not until she was actually sure this wasn't just a slightly gilded cage. "Don't suppose there's food in here?"
Right?
"A guest?"
