Zombie Apocalypse | Variable Aphro
The city was lost by nightfall, completely overrun by the walking dead, but there were still pockets of resistance in the form of roving gangs of survivors. They all had only one goal; to escape from the doomed city, past the quarantine blockade and back into the world of the living. Or whatever would be left of it when they got there. The zombies had been attacking for a little over a day, and the ramshackle shelters were falling one by one. Bars, restaurants and shops that had been hurriedly boarded up, leaving the survivors inside no choice but to run. The lucky ones escaped. The unlucky ones were devoured.
It was nearly nightfall and Billy was exhausted from the daylong battle, his Marine instincts still on high alert. The shop he'd been hiding in most of the day wouldn't last through the wave at nightfall. He had been rushing towards an apartment building in the distance when he'd spotted her, holed up alone in a nearby shop. It took him a moment to realize she wasn't one of them, but as soon as he did he went back for her instantly.
They reached the building together and rushed upstairs to the second floor, where they broke open an apartment and began throwing the furniture down the hall stairway to block it off.
Once the stairway was blocked, he showed her into a second apartment, locking and deadbolting the door behind him.
"We'll be safe in here," he said, reloading the clip on his machine gun as he leaned against the door to catch his breath. This was the first time he could get a good look at his new companion. "Are you okay?"
