During the time that Mello had been dead, he had been in his arms. The fact that he was holding a dead body didn't seem to bother him. Not when he'd done it before. Nakago ordered his food in and watched the injuries heal to practically nothing.
And yet, Mello still didn't wake up. So he kept holding him.
He'd been taking a rare time to sleep, sitting up with the man against him. This hadn't been because he wanted to but because he knew that depriving himself of sleep would aid no one. And would not keep him prepared should that vampire choose to arrive sooner rather than later.
It was that sharp breath that stirred him out of sleep. Blue eyes flew open to abandon sleep in favor of looking down at his lover as he let him regain his barrings, his arms tightening around him for a moment as if to let him know that he wasn't actually alone.
Eyes wide and staring, for a moment, Mello looked terrified, gasping raggedly as his body suddenly just needed oxygen, the world rushing in to surround him and crash back into reality. He didn't feel Nakago specifically at first, just everything all at once when just a moment ago there had been absolutely nothing. He just knew he needed air, heart thudding against his chest irregularly, as if trying to adjust to a normal beat again.
"Mello," Nakago finally said calmly, "Breathe deeply. You'll get more air into your lungs if you breathe deeply." And it would get his heart to slow down so it would stop pounding due to suddenly beating and the panic that seemed to be rising from his lover. "Breathe deeply."
A voice, calm and close by. Mello latched onto it, trying to do as he was told, trying to find a rhythm to his breathing and take in more air. It had never been so difficult before, when breathing just happened. One hand found Nakago's arm and held onto it as if to anchor himself.
