It was like waking up slowly, slowly, laying there comatose without being able to move while very gradually things began to exist again, present as if in a separate sphere and so slowly materializing all around until they could be felt, as if it had been the world itself that had been dead and not him at all.

The cuts and bites healed (somehow--whether by magic or something else, the Hotel would probably never reveal) within the first day, leaving only faint scars, and the bruises healed soon after. The rest, however, was harder--or at least it took more time, it seemed--and he lay there unmoving, pale and cold despite the fact there were no longer wounds. It looked like sleeping, except for the way there was no breathing, no heartbeat.

Mello had no way to know how long he had been this way, of course. There was nothing, nothing at all, and then there was darkness and only the slightest, vaguest sense of something that was hardly even awareness, simply existing, and three days passed like this with no change. Then, suddenly, there was pain, bursting up in his chest to wake him suddenly from that sleep which could not be eternal in this place, burning in lungs that suddenly craved air.

Mello gasped, a shuddering, desperate breath, and opened his eyes.
