The settlement is not devoid of life, nor is the planet empty of life. There were birds chirping, insects buzzing and things moving beneath the boats. It is, however, a pre-existing agricultural settlement (pre-existing to before earth refugees joined the ranks) Like any farm settlement, natural wildlife and large predators that would be a danger have been removed/discouraged/scared off/warded against what have you. Even the route taken to the settlement proper would have been well used enough that you're not going to have the planet's equivalent of bears or coyotes popping out curiously. This area has had and held human life and farms for hundreds of years.
The livestock was either taken or killed off in the attack.
Anyway, there's plenty of "normal" wildlife, but you're not going to get mountain lions and whales in this sort of environment.
